Florida Water (Not the Aftershave)

I went to Florida on vacation a few weeks back and noticed that my blade developed rust on it over the course of 4 days. I was using my Merkur 38C with a feather blade (my standard setup). I've never had a blade rust before.

I know the water in FL doesn't agree with my stomach - could it also not agree with my blade?

Absolutely. I don't find Florida's water to be as terrible as some states, but it's far from good, and definitely capable of ruining your blade. On the bright side, if you were to take your vacation today, I think only crude oil comes out of sinks and shower heads down there anymore.

Many of us in Florida have water softeners , which use sodium to soften the water. If you don't dry your blades (shake and then air dry while razor is open), rust may result.

Otherwise, here in St. Pete our water is fine.

Ahh... maybe that's why the water smells sodium-y...

No - I don't dry my blades other than a couple of shakes into the sink. I'll have the keep that in mind the next time I'm down there.
