Fixing the Goodfella

Even though I'd read less then stellar reviews about this razor I wanted to get my hands on 1, I didn't want to pay $60 so I advertised for a trade.
When I got 1 I figured a aggressive blade like a feather would put some teeth into this reportedly mild shaver but alas it was excessively mild to the point of being unusable.
Why?
Comparing the Goodfella head with a Gillette Old Type which it is obviously based on showed that the curve of the blade platform was the same but the glaring difference was the spacing and width of the combs.
The Gillette Old Type has combs that are about 1/2 the size of the spacing between the combs, the Goodfella has combs that are wider then the spaces between them.
Could the answer be this simple?
I took a needle file and tried to file the Goodfella's teeth, no go the metal is too hard for a file so I mounted a cut off wheel on my Dremel, mounted the Dremel in a vise and widen the space between the teeth.
Don't try this at home unless your prepared to ruin a razor, I'm a trained Professional  and my results were cosmetically less then desirable.

How was the shave?
My Goodfella now shaves just like a Gillette Old Type, which is to say very good.
I wonder what the makers of the Goodfella were thinking?
The 2nd problem many have with the Goodfella is the handle, I really like the design, very modern looking.
But at about 3/8ths in diameter it's too skinny, too short at 3 inches and the gripping grooves don't come far enough down the handle.
Now making handles is my specialty so I made a handle that's a little fatter, 7/16ths and a little longer at 3 1/4 inches and I brought the gripping grooves further down the handle.
Here's a picture of the handle before plating.

Awesome work Bob.

Here's my take on this:

Knowing these flaws, the Goodfella is obviously a waste of $60.

So my recommendations, would be to buy one of Bob's awesome creations (my Bull Mastiff XL has been ordered w/ a New head), or buy one of the awesome works of art that is a Muhle razor (my closed comb R89 just showed up today, and it is awesome!!), but they also make an open comb version.

Actually I'm thinkng of forwarding my results to Andrew, CEO of Good Fella maybe they'll fix the problem.
I've always wonder why companies copy the Old Type when Gillette made 2 generations of improved open comb razors.
Probably easier to manufacturer.
I believe the more companies making DE razors the better it is for all of us who love this hobby/obsession.
I rather see more companies making premium products as opposed to the Asian sweat shops dumping their inferior goods on us.

+1,000 we should try to keep the few premium brands we still have alive!

If not we are about the last generation that can still buy a decent (new) razor which would mean the death of DE in the end since none of them will last forever.

I sent a e-mail to Andrew at Goodfella and today I received a reply and to make a long story short he basically said that his target audience is the guy new to DE shaving not shaving geeks like use.
He also said he hasn't had any complaints about the mildness of the Goodfella and has no plans for a more aggressive version.
Well that's that.

I really like my longer fatter version of the handle, I recently had a order for one 4 inches long , it's much easier to make then the Bull Mastiff handle.
I'm trying to think of a catchy name for the handle, I don't want to call it the
"Improved Goodfella" that's implying that something was wrong with
the original:wink2:

Sounds like your answer was 'thanks for writing, **** off now'. :wink2:

I would call it the 'Wise Guy'.

Loving my Bull Mastiff. Got my long tooth NEW head back from plating, it's a beaut of a setup now.

I got a Goodfella. The first one had uneven blade gap. I got a replacement. The second one had an uneven blade gap. I gave up on the thing.

Really? They're not manufacturing a product for people who know what they're buying???
It's a shame that Goodfella doesn't listen. It seems that many of us were excited and more than willing to embrace their product. But their devotion seems disingenuous.

Great work Bob!

The differences are easy to spot!

........he basically said that his target audience is the guy new to DE shaving .......

As in "those poor souls don't know what it should be like anyway" ?

I am not so sure what to think of a DE manufacturer that doesn't want to even listen to an experienced audience :001_unsur .

That is actually clever!

Maybe borrow from Gillette and call it a "Deluxe" handle, or a "NEW" handle. I'd love to see it plated in nickel.

Wait till next week.
When I have a exciting new product I have to post pictures in the brass or wait a week.
I made 3 handles, the 1 that's pictured and a 4 inch version with rings only a third of the way down the handle and the third one I made is also 3 1/4 but the ring spacing is a little close and there's more rings.
They all went to the plating shop Monday, the 1st two are already spoken for but as always I can make more and will post them on my site and my vendors threads.

are these goodfella razors even that popular amongst DE shavers? Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a $10 Tech? :001_huh:

You are correct, but it was my thought that they could easily produce a more aggressive version that would appeal to the hardcore wetshaving community by simply milling larger gaps and smaller tines on the head.

I don't think they are that popular. The consensus as I have seen it, is that they are very overpriced for what they are.

For roughly the same price (the Goodfella is $55 + shipping), you can have a Bull Mastiff with a re-plated Tech head, or New head, or Old head, and these would for sure be a better bang for the buck. :thumbup1:
