Even though I'd read less then stellar reviews about this razor I wanted to get my hands on 1, I didn't want to pay $60 so I advertised for a trade.
When I got 1 I figured a aggressive blade like a feather would put some teeth into this reportedly mild shaver but alas it was excessively mild to the point of being unusable.
Why?
Comparing the Goodfella head with a Gillette Old Type which it is obviously based on showed that the curve of the blade platform was the same but the glaring difference was the spacing and width of the combs.
The Gillette Old Type has combs that are about 1/2 the size of the spacing between the combs, the Goodfella has combs that are wider then the spaces between them.
Could the answer be this simple?
I took a needle file and tried to file the Goodfella's teeth, no go the metal is too hard for a file so I mounted a cut off wheel on my Dremel, mounted the Dremel in a vise and widen the space between the teeth.
Don't try this at home unless your prepared to ruin a razor, I'm a trained Professional and my results were cosmetically less then desirable.
How was the shave?
My Goodfella now shaves just like a Gillette Old Type, which is to say very good.
I wonder what the makers of the Goodfella were thinking?
The 2nd problem many have with the Goodfella is the handle, I really like the design, very modern looking.
But at about 3/8ths in diameter it's too skinny, too short at 3 inches and the gripping grooves don't come far enough down the handle.
Now making handles is my specialty so I made a handle that's a little fatter, 7/16ths and a little longer at 3 1/4 inches and I brought the gripping grooves further down the handle.
Here's a picture of the handle before plating.
