First shave with the feather

I received a feather portable and feather razors today so I shaved as fast as I could. These blades are SHARP!!! I've been alternating between red personnas and crystals and there is no comparison to the feather. I was scared shaving near my lips and throat because I'm just not used to this level of sharpness. I'll have to wait and see if I have any skin left or redness but I'm impressed so far.

The difference is striking. I ordered 200 of these from our friendly doctor. While I'll use them, I have a little buyer's remorse as I should have test drove them first. They take moles, skin, bumps... Anything that sticks up gets whacked off. Makes DE shaving a real challenge. Got a slim adjustable in the mail the other day. I'm hoping to be able to dial it down to "1" and tame these freakshow sharp blades down a bit. They know know how to sharpen a blade in Japan. No doubt about that. A bunch of Spyderco knives are made there and Spyderco is known for their out-of-the-box sharpness.

Combine a Feather blade with a relatively mild razor such as a Blue Tip, and you'll get a sublime shave without the worry...

Or at least that's been my experience. On the other hand, YMMV...

Same experience here. I am still relatively new but when I put a feather in my Merkur HD, it did cause some irritation on my neck, chin and moustache area. For me, I am more than happy with Derby. Derby are much cheaper and works great. But I will keep the sampler pack of feathers around for when I decide to try out a different - more mild razor.

YMMV indeed, but a Ball End Tech and a Feather is another nice pairing. Less aggressive gap than the Feather Portable, with a slightly longer, heavier handle.

I find technique very important while wielding a Feather. I didn't like them at all in the beginning - they chewed up my face. But today, nothing gets as close with zero irritation, assuming a quality prep.

Feathers are so sharp that when using them I don't get a "feel" for the shave. No sense of friction or pull on my whiskers at all. As a result, I end up cutting myself. Think I will stay with my Crystals.

Had my first feather shave last night. Went 2 passes with the 38C, then ATG, and touch up.
WOW! I`m still BBS smooth 12 hours later. Woke up the SWMBO this AM with a ,"feel my face!" lol

+2 on the sharpness. I got a 5 pack of Feathers as part of my sampler, and it tore my face up good. I don't blame the blade, but rather that I tried it when I was 4 weeks in to DE shaving, and used too much pressure, improper angle, etc. It's a super sharp blade, and very unforgiving of poor technique. It will be some time before I use one again until my basic skill set of prep., angle and pressure is better honed. (pun intended).

A little red this morning but I think I'm all good. I'm actually waiting on an EJ89 from QED and hope the pairing will work out. If not I'll be in the market for that blue tip. What's funny is I'm thinking change razor first before blade and that is b/c this forum is addictive.

VERY GOOD ADVICE!
I had the same experience. Put a Feather in the Muhle R89 ( mild and smooth shaver ).
Had a terrific shave. The best in my life to be precise!
Terrific blade!

I think you will love that combo! A Feather in a EJ89 will deliver magnificent shaves.
Let us know how it was. And make sure you practiced a bit! If you didn't, you might get not as a great shave as you expect.
I resisted the tempation of using a Feather for 3 months! I then tried it and was rewarded with a fabulous shave :thumbup1:

I have tried feather blades and found them harsh for me as they are just to sharp. Read here about corking a blade but that almost seems counter productive to dull a blade a bit before using it.

So far I like the red personna blades :)

I started with Red Personna's and while they're forgiving, they're not sharp enough. The Feathers are great as they mow through the coarse parts with ease. I like a sharp blade.

Big +1! A Feather in the 89 head is a perfect pairing. Also give a try to the Gillette "Black Ninja" with that razor, if you're looking to experiment. Also a good match, IMO.

I never heard of the Gillette Black Ninja blade? What blade is it?
Could you post a link with more info for the "black ninja" Gillette blade?

Thanx

I think he means the Gillette 7 o'clock platinum. They are in black wrappers.

My first experience with a Feather blade was very good. The blade cut hair like a knife in butter and I got no razor burn.
