First shave with the Ever Ready 1912

Had this for a few weeks, finally got in some SE blades from WCS. A 10 pak of Gems. I took her for a spin tonight and WOW, what a super shave. I've still got a learning curve on this to smooth it out, but this thing is AWESOME. I did, sometimes, feel like I was getting poked by the corners, but it wasn't too bad. A generous helping of Tabac helped keep things under control. Guess I'll have to search out some Ted Pellas now. Not sure I'm ready to commit to 100 of a blade and that's the only way I've seen them

My apologies for the sub bar pic.

If you're not looking for a huge blade commitment, check out the treet blades that amazon sells. You can buy smaller quantities there.

one of those 1912's was the first SE I ever used - these days I prefer a g-bar but either way they still give great results, though I tend to use SE mainly for headshaving

If the GEMs you got are the stainless steel variety, they're pretty much indistinguishable from the ones that Ted Pella sells in my opinion. They're both made by ASR and to me deliver pretty much the same shave experience. And yeah, those corners will reach out and snag you. I've got a short beard and trimming the line on the bottom can be tricky with the 1912, although it gives a nice shave otherwise.

The 1912 is a fine razor. You have to remember to keep the blade cap almost on your skin when you shave. SE are not like a DE razor. The angle you hold it is very shallow (10 degrees +/-) otherwise you will end up scraping your beard off not cutting it.

The corners should be neatly tucked behind the blade stops on both sides. Check to make sure your blade is loaded with the blade under those stops and that the stops are not damaged or broken off.

Looks like I had the blade on TOP of the blade stops. WHOOPS :blushing: I thought the blade gap was humongous. Oh well, still got a really nice shave and being that I didn't kill or seriously maim myself, I'm ok with that. Live and learn right? Thanks for the tip Turtle!

okie dokie. The second shave with the ever ready, blade properly inserted this time, was most excellent. Lathered up with my B&B boar brush and the proraso bomb and man that is a nice little shaving instrumentt. Definitely in the rotation

My first couple of SE shaves were with a damaskeene (just last week), and my next two were with a GEM 1912, which is considerably more aggressive, but, man, that 1912 shaves close. I'm now resolved to master it because when it wasn't cutting me open (and I really only had a couple of tiny nicks), it gave me the best non-barber shave of my life! Happy shaving with yours!

I actually got an ER1912-RAD last month. It is an outstanding shaver (slightly more aggressive than the Damaskeene, which is fine with me) and it was the first "not new out of the box" razor that my wife not only shudder at rather she thought it looks classy in our bathroom, that chain-link handle sealed the deal:)
I thought of getting one replated but I got one in pretty minty shape, will post pics after I get it cleaned and all...
Enjoy!

Wow, talk about the YMMV. I have found the exact opposite to be true. I have found the Damaskeene to be the more aggressive razor. The 1912 to me is almost as mild as my G-Bar.

I have a micromatic also. Ready to load that baby up! What other SE's would y'all suggest? Could be a cool factor, efficiency factor, or whatever

G-bar if you like mild razors. Be careful of the MM, it is a fairly aggressive razor (I've only used the open comb model. The Clog-Pruf might be different). But it does give great shaves if you're diligent. You could also try a Lather Catcher if you are really adventuress.

At first I was afraid, I was petrified.... sorry, bad movie pun intended. My GEM is the clog proof. Naturally, I'll be on the lookout for more :detective:

Get a lather catcher. If you can manage a shave with a naked blade, then everything is mild afterwards.

I like the Ever-Ready 1924's as well, the so-called "Shovel Head". They are also quite aggressive and require a lot of careful attention paid to blade angle.

I may have an idea, almost. Didn't get the blade under the blade holders for the first shave. I'd swear there was 1/4 inch blade gap. VERY efficient... 2nd shave felt much less dangerous, we'll just say. Oh man, my RAD is starting to kick up again

This morning I tried a micromatic clog proof and got a great shave, no nicks, no burn, and I took far less care than with the 1912. This could easily become my daily shave!

The Treets are the only SE blades I've tried (am new to this, though very enthusiastic). Great blades, no problem with them at all, but I've yet to compare it to a stainless blade.
