First REAL razor (hopefully): 1949 Gillette Super-Speed

Hi everyone. I've been using good technique and good shaving creams for a while now, but I am still using an M3 cartridge razor. I've been getting much better results than ever before.

However, I couldn't wait any more and put down a bid on an extremely clean 1949 Gillette Super-Speed (notched bar) on eBay. I thought that would be an awesome first razor to use. Wish me luck!

Been trying to use a VDH boar, but... meh. I also just ordered a Semogue 830 from Vintage Scent!

Thanks! I was going to get the Merkur HD as the go-to beginner razor, but I thought I'd go with the one that has been "tried and true" since the beginning.

Hope you get the razor. It's a real "Standard" and would be a good razor to use when comparing the performance and feel of other razors.

I went the merkur hd route in the beginning, but I just received a '48/'49 in the mail this afternoon. I know one shave is not enough to make a good judgement, but I can say that this is the best shave I have had from a gillette product, certainly better than anything they currently offer. After searching eBay for a few weeks I finally snagged one for a decent price (<$8 shipped), it's not. The shiniest razor in the world but it got the job done. If I had it to do over again though I may have looked more at the B/S/T section, pretty much all the razors that change hands there go for much less than you're average eBay price, so if you don't win this auction, definately check that out.

Great razor. If I want a smooth, easy shave, that's the one I reach for.

(And if you don't win that one, they've made several recent appearances on the B/S/T.)

'49 SS is a great razor. Enjoy!

The '40s Superspeed is about as good a razor as can be found anywhere. It's got a simple, spare, elegant design, and it hits a sweet spot, producing excellent shaves without slicing your face the way a wayward slant or MMOC can. You may not ever want another razor.

That was a joke, of course. Once you find how much you like the Superspeed, once that sweet DE shave bites you:001_tt1:, RAD sets in like rabies.

And it can be just as fatal, if your SWMBO finds out just how many razors you have. You think all those "everything must go" sales on B/S/T are prompted by a Road-to-Damascus enlightenment? No. They're prompted by the hissyfit that follows when your closet box spills over and showers your SWMBO with a not so gentle Gillette-Gem rain.

The 40's style SS was my first "real" razor too. A classic.

You WILL be tempted to get RAD and want to try every razor ever build by human hands... You know what? You can save yourself the effort. The 40's SS was never really topped. Other razors might be different, but I would be hard pressed to come up with a razor that I could definitely say was better.

I shaved with my NDC '40s SS this morning. I have to agree with Legion. I bought seven other razors after the SS and always come back to it. It is, by far, my favorite.

I'm waiting for my Semogue 830 to arrive as well. I'm going to order a sample pack of blades from Bullgoose as well as some TOBS Shaving Shop cream and maybe some Musgo balm. I'd better stop there before I spend every last red cent. :)

Great shave indeed!
