First Honing - $6 auction STR8 1/2 restore - Shave

Hello All,

I have to share that I was finally able to do a test shave with one of my online auction razors. I purchaced and used my first straight last month.

I purchased a Whipped Dog sight-unseen kit from Larry and I was more excited about the shave than I was with the razor. I am sorry Larry, the really worn Spike was sharp but the bevel had some rough spots dare I say yellowish-red spots. I tried to use the razor as reccomended without stropping but as a noob I was worried and sure I was going to cut myself and didn't want any health issues. I studied the honeing job and stropped real quick on the balsa green side to touch up the bevel and went for it. I did not get a BBS shave but it was comfortable and less irritating than most shaves I have had.

That brings me to my auction buys of a Shumate Lightning(originally from MO), Clauss (nice scales and slight smile), and an Unknown German made for Neville's Hardware Quincy, IL (my parents work and father owns a business in Quincy, IL). The Clauss needed a bunch of polishing and have about 30 hrs in it now with hand polishing. The Shumate has a slight frown and almost have it ready to hone, and the Neville has now been honed and that brings us here.

Decent test shave, toe and heel are way way sharp and middle not so much. I am excited that I was able to put any edge of shave quality on a razor. It is going back to the bench in hopes to get the same edge all the way across the edge. Pretty excited!

Not sure if any of noobs have the same experiance but my wonderful wife says that she is happy but would like it better if I would do my tests on my feet instead of my hands. The backs of both of my hands and my left wrist are BBS. At least my Invicta doesn't have any more hair to rip out of my wrist.

Thanks for having a place that I can share my pride to those that have an understanding.

I will post pics when I finish the restores. I need to learn repinning and find a pinning kit or two.

right on!!!

and, also one of Larry's recommendations, use a tomato instead of your arms.. I too had hairless arms when i started honing LMAO

thanks for sharing!
