What's new

First experience from a newbie..

Hey guys, i'm pretty excited to write here and now, well this is my second post(of course the first one was about wich razor to start with), and i've found pretty much help here, so i want to share how was my first DE shave.

First of all, and making some history, i wanted to try a DE but the money was an issue, so thaught that i'd buy my first razor in about 4 months or so. Last sunday i was chatting with my grandpa, and suddenly i had an idea , o asked to him how did he shave when he was 24 years(i'm 24), and he told me , "i used to use a DE", well not exactly since we're mexican and we speak spanish haha, then i said "wow how i wish to try one of those", and he told me "ok son then i'll give you my old razor", can you imagine how excited i was???, a truly vintage razor that mu grandpa owns at his 20's..i mean..well, you know what i mean.. after of a little search at his old things, finally he gave it to me, at first it looked kinda ugly, but a 40 years old stored razor couldn't look like a new one, so i take a closer look and i discovered it is a gillete adjustable, now i know is a slim one...it was super dirty...when i was at home, i decided to clean it , and i had seen some of mantic59's videos and there he give some advices on how to clean a vintage DE, so i clean it and is pretty good right now, i mean it's not as shiny as some restored razors i've seen here, but is useful.

I get 3 blades, there are a gillete supe thin, made in brasil...they are not sharp, as i imagined to be, but are what i have right know, however, i load one into my slim, and after a shower i lather up my face(with gillete foamy), and started to shave, is dissapoint me a little bit, but that is because this blade are not sharp, and of course my tecnique, anyway i was pretty happy on doing it.

I'm saying the blades arent sharp because when i was shaving i felt much pain when the blade was cutting my hair.

I did set my slim on 4 because i think is good to start at the middle..dont know..i'm thinkin of get a sampler of blades to give it a try...and i hope those would be better than this crap i have...until then i want to thank you for the advices, and sorry of my crappy english...maybe i could improve it at the same time as my shaves haha

Welcome. Family razors are always the best. Some Maas or Blue Magic metal polish will shine it up nice. #4 might be a little high to begin. Try 2 or 3, some good blades and ditch the foamy for some Proraso or better cream or the cheap VDH brush and soap you see at Walmart or some drug stores. Anything but canned goo.

Welcome! A Slim is a great razor. Unless you catch the collecting bug, you may never need another. As njpaddy said, definitely get rid of the canned shaving cream, and get a soap or cream that you lather with a brush. Van der Hagen is one good, inexpensive, brand of soap to start with. Tweezerman badger brushes are cheap and good.

Enjoy the forums! Have you discovered Mantic59's shaving videos on YouTube? If not, definitely worth looking at.

Welcome!

There is great advice on cleaning razors.

If you can't barbicide to soak it for about twenty minutes, get scrubbing bubbles and spray it on and the use an old toothbrush to get it clean.

Then if you can get some Maas polish to make it sparkle your grandfather won't recognize it. Hopefully they will be in stock and the clerks will not say to you "No Maas, No Maas" :tongue_sm
