What's new

First encounter with real shaving cream!

Went to Bath and Body Works and picked up some C. O. Bigelow (Paraso) Shaving Cream. Then went to RiteAid and bought a VDH kit, Pinuad Clubman A/S, and Clubman Talc.

Placed bowl and brush in sink with hot tap water. Took a shower. Drained sink. Put a cap size dallop in bowl and made some real lather!

Even though I am still using a Fusion razor, the lather was so slick and smooth! The razor just glided so easy over my skin! Rinsed face, slapped on some Clubman and I was in heaven!

I can't wait until I get a real razor. I think my father still has one of those DE ones stuffed in a drawer.

I will never EVER use canned gels or foams again! They lost a customer tonight!

Glad you loved it!

You can get larger tubes of the Proraso online for $11 a tube. I ordered 2 for $22 from an online vendor a couple of weeks ago.

That's certainly a nice start as far as supplies. A DE razor will be the final nail in the coffin for modern shave methods.

Welcome to the fraternity. As much as you like the cream, you could end up preferring soaps over it. Creams are great but I find that I'm a soap man as are others. I find that I get greater pleasure from lathering a soap than I do a cream. That being said I do have about 7 creams in my den. With 16 soaps.

i'm glad you liked the bigelow and dropped the canned goo
definitely check out shaveaback.com
since you have a bathandbodyworks around look for "the body shop" and get the Macca cream

Welcome!!

And when you experience the pleasure of a single blade shave, you will wonder what kept you from it for so long!

Congrats and welcome to B&B!

You've taken the first step, now go get a DE and a sampler pack of blades. If you think the shaving cream is good, wait until you get up to speed with DE. You won't believe how good it gets!

I have been happy with West Coast Shave- Plus they have great DE blade sampler packs and this may be as important an item for a noob that there is.

I have been DE shaving for a few years now. A buddy of mine turned me on to the sampler pack from West Coast Shaving. I just got it the other week, it is a great deal and a good way to find what blade you like. :thumbup1:

The shaving goo was a happy loss for me, I never got a good shave with it.

To be perfectly honest Ive gotten a DFS using a can of one dollar barbasol. With a little water added I can get it just the right thickness. Dont get me wrong I def prefer using a good soap or cream, but in a hurry Ive found that my can of goo isnt as horrible as I expected, ymmv of course.

You just learnt a very valuable lesson there. Canned Gel and Foam is a really poor substitute for a real Shaving Soap or Cream.

Even cartridge razors which tend to be looked down upon somewhat around these parts perform so much better when paired with a decent soap/cream.

If and when you move over to a DE Razor the difference in the quality of your shaves will be night and day over what you have experienced so far. I'm still a newbie at this - DE shaver since March 2010 -but I would never go back to a cartridge razor now.

Stick at it and pickup a vintage Gillette / Merkur or whatever and you will be kicking yourself for not making the switch before now.

Super-Lather FTW.

I love mixing cream with soap, nothing compares to a Super-Lather.

Well done to the OP. When I started shaving a brush and soap was how I started. One time, at the supermarket, they had no hard soap, so I bought some Gillette Foam. Do people really use that stuff to shave with?

Excellent, now comes the DE's.

I believe there is a man on B&B wearing a trench coat that has 40 or so.

I echo these sentiments. I started using a brush & soap about a month before I made the switch to DE, and it improved my skin greatly.

Proraso is great stuff, and it's probably my favorite shave of the week. Check out their other products and go full Proraso...I've only tried the AS splash, but the balm and the pre/post cream get great marks around here as well.
