What's new

Finaly took the plunge and bought a progress

Hi,
I thought I'd post this as there have been many negative Merkur posts just recently.
After a slight hiccup with my order splendidly sorted (By Connaught) with a reply to my email in 20 minutes and as fast as the post could manage. I have received my Progress.
First impression was that wow! this is heavier and much more solid than I expected. The plating is faultless inside and out, no play whatsoever and perfectly even blade gap.
:biggrin1:
First shave - well I've been going at the DE and SE thing for a year now and if I hadn't tried a long comb NEW I would say this is the best razor ever! I will of course exclude the 1912 SE but to compare any DE to that would be unfair.
:wink2:.
Angle is different, handle closer to the face than many vintage (This is my first modern DE).
I used a new Astra Sp, my go-to blade, and kept all other variables the same and I can say it was a wonderful shave. Set on just below 2 it felt aggressive but not overly, I think I could probably go up to 3 or so when I get the angle better. 2 pass + bits DFS bordering on BBS !
I'm not easily impressed but I must say this one is not going to be hiding in the drawer very often.
Thanks for reading.

Glad you had a good experience. Merkur takes too much of a hit IMO all the while delivering some of the best razors around. I am particularity fond of the Progress, always get a terrific shave with one and have not run into any plating or quality issues at all. I have also found their customer service to be responsive and fair. Can't get any better than the Mergress, the Digress is nice and some of the Ikon adaptations are the best around.

Congrats on your purchase. The Progress, and it's modified Mergress sibling are among the best razors I've ever owned. I also echo not having any issues with plating on any of the five Merkurs in my collection. Just make sure you're lining up the top cap with the 'Witness' mark on the side of the head with the triangle to have the adjustment settings be accurate. Have fun!:thumbup1:

I've owned numerous progress razors and all of them were more than acceptable.

I doubt I will ever be without one in my rotation of DE razors.
