What's new

Finally got my 34c

I got my Merkur 34c at my Superbowl/Bday party yesterday along with some AOS Sandalwood cream. It came with 5 feather blades and 1 Merkur blade. I had already ordered a silvertip brush from WhippedDog a week before and could barely stand the wait.

Not having a bowl or scuttle, I decided to face lather. I must have left too much water on the brush because water ended up flipping all over the counter as I lathered. Once lathered up, I tried a WTG pass with mixed results. I followed with a couple of XTG passes and left my neck a bloody mess. But I'm still breathing and looking forward to shave #2 in the morning (with less water in the brush this time).

The journey has begun.

I recommend shaking the brush a few times to remove excess water when you're face lathering creams. The same goes for shave sticks, once you give those a try.

I also use a 34c, and had a similar bloody mess on the neck for the first couple shaves. I eventually learned to ease up pressure over the neck area, and essentially use extremely light (no pressure whatsoever), short passes with the grain. That solved the problem for me. Hope your next shave goes better.

The 34C is a great razor, if you get the chance to pick up the now out of production 11C, you'll notice it's the same razor just an open comb version.

It is indeed a fantastic razor. You'll get the hang of it and be enjoying great shaves in no time!

With wet shaving it is all technique and angle my friend, the 34C HD was my first razor and still in use today in my rotation thoguh my EJ89 atm has been staying a little in the lead being shaved with the past 4 shaves since I got it. But I'll bring out the old 34C again soon, it is a fantastic beginner razor and well I think it is excellent for all really. You did very well choosing for sure, it will give you a life time and then some of fantastic shaves once you get the handle of wet shaving. Congrats, and yes you will be getting great shaves in the near future with that baby lol. My advice...stick to it a while and make it your one and only and master technique, RAD and so on CAN cause a slowness in skill building as you will be pre occupied with acquiring things and not perfecting what you have.

OMG...I just committed a B&B sin...lol

Which blade did you use?, Merkurs are not the best and Feathers are super sharp, you may be better off trying some red IPs.

I used the feathers since all I had were those and the Merkur. I ordered some sample packs from Garry (Astra and Derbys).

My second shave this morning was much better. Only a couple of weepers. I tried using shorter strokes this time. I'm assuming that if I can hear the whisker's being cut then my angle is probably OK, right?

Toothpick

Needs milk and a bidet!
34C was my first razor. Learned to DE shave with it. I've never suffered any major blood loss, casual weeper every now and then though. just remember zero pressure. the weight of the razor and gravity is all you need.

also a good tip i learned from B&B is to always remember the goal is "beard reduction". You're not trying to achieve a BBS in one pass. 2-3 passes is normal.
