Feather Black and Yellow

I've searched, but can't find any mention of the differences between Feather razor blades in the yellow and black packaging. One vendor I found mentioned that the black was newer packaging - but are they really the same blade?

I was shopping for blades, brushes, and cream, and found a vendor who had the black package blades in stock (which I hadn't seen before, which piqued my interest), but was OOS of the traditional yellow packaged razor blades everyone seems to comment on.

I trust the comments of this group over any vendor. I was promised once that the Nikkor AF lenses were superior to the AIs lenses that were stolen, and found out afterward that I'd been duped, and had I checked with a more reputable Nikon dealer (this is in the pre-internet days - no vast knowledge base like Nikonians.org, photo.net, Fred Miranda, or any of the other forums that have cropped up in the digital age) than my insurance company's supplier, I wouldn't have been lead astray.

Black has been replaced by a different logo yellow but they are both 5 blade pack

The other yellow is a 10 blade pack

They are the same blade.

Thanks everyone. I was shopping for a 5 blade pack - building my own sampler of some of the blades that talk her has spiked my interest, rather than a group of blades that includes something the seller is trying to unload. You've given me a lot of confidence to try the black box Feathers, and not worry about getting something completely different from what everyone else has been talking about (the raves and the jeers).

Thanks!

Not to be argumentative, but this sampler pack claims to have 10-packs of Feathers in both black and yellow packaging.

However, after digging around in the Shave Wiki here, this is what I learned - there are actually three kinds of Feathers, and it looks like the black package are to be avoided:
There are three known types of Feather DE razor blades.

  • Hi-Stainless These are the older blades that came in the black and gray package. They are not platinum coated and are no longer produced.
  • NeW Platinum Hi-Stainless These are platinum coated blades that were produced along with the non-platinum blades back in the 80's. They have "Platinum Coated Blade" and "NeW HI-STAINLESS" printed on the blade. They do not have the Feather logo or "TRADE MARK" printed on them. They were discontinued along with the non-platinum blades in 1988.
  • Platinum Hi-Stainless These are the current production platinum coated blades in the new yellow & red package BUT with the old style printing on the blade. They also have a new triple bevel edge.

So the black Feathers are a lower grade (not platinum coated) razor blade that are NOS produced in 1988 or older. Current production are the Platinum Hi-Stainless in the yellow box (with red lettering). Indeed, upon further study, the black and gray packaging lacks the word Platinum. The devil is in the details!

The information was here, I just didn't look hard enough. Oh well, maybe someone else learns as I did from this. But I do feel somewhat vindicated. Remember I mentioned the vendor who claimed the black label Feathers were newer packaging? Hah! Yes, and the packaging lacks any reference to platinum coating. So who do I trust? The vendor, or the shave wiki?

A lot of posts seem to mimic the wiki - yellow are platinum coated, and the black are not. But a lot seem to say other things, like different markets, 5 pack vs. 10 pack. The bulk boxes show different blade art. But then there are reports that the Black label say platinum on the dispenser. Who to believe? Feather. The information included in their DE razor says they're the same blade. With all the cartridge competition out there, I'm not sure that there's a big enough market share to justify two lines of DE razor production in Japan, so they produce only their best - the platinum coated Hi Stainless. Kind of like when Nikon dropped to only one 35mm SLR, it was their best, the F6. Makes sense to me.

Well, then time to update the Wiki.

Thanks Takeshi!

I did not realize the scope of this thread was to account for the total production history of Feather........:biggrin1:

I thought this was about current production.

Well, from the Wiki, the only way to explain the black label Feathers is to look back, as it says current production are in the yellow and red packaging.
