Favorite method to lap your coticule.

I picked up a La Grise coti a couple of weeks ago. The supplier lapped it for me, but I realize I will need to lap this myself some time in the future. Does anyone recommend a personnel method for doing so? I've read that people use a DMT 325 followed by various grit of W/D sandpaper up to 2.5K; this seems a little excessive but I wouldn't know.

What does everyone use?

I use either my DMT 325 or my Atoma 1200. The DMT is invaluable if you're going to be honing with any sort of regularity. The Atoma is nice too, but is very expensive...

Usually coticules don't need to be lapped much at all, so you might be better off just using some W/D Sandpaper...

I never lapped a Coti past 325x. My LGJ was very soft so I used w/d paper - the rest were done on a DMT.

I do the same, dmt 325 then slurry stone. As many razors as I do I don't see the need to lap a coticule very often..

All depends on how bad it is. I've gone as low as my dmt 220 for some extra hard or extra dished ones. Then 325, 600, 1200 and a sometimes a slurry or bbw rub for good measure.

If you use your slurry stone on the parts that will wear the least (the ends of the hone) you can extend the time between lapping it and so extend the life of your Coticule.
Some people say it is not as important with a Coticule to keep it perfectly flat as it is for other stones, some of the old guys even honed on a dished Coticule with good results. I think if it is the last stone in your progression (your finisher) you can get away with a little bit dished stone but if you follow with another (flat) finisher it is important to keep your Coticule flat.

I've had good success with wet dry sand paper - 220 then 400 on a piece of marble tile with running water. Then lapped with my slurry stone to smooth it out.
I'm very new to the whole process, but I can shave with the edges I'm getting so at least its the right direction.

I use my 325 or my DMT lapping plate, but I do go on down to very fine grit sand paper to smooth the stone. Once the stone is lapped perfectly flat the time and stone lost to going finer is very tiny! It literally only takes seconds per grit level!

I would not bother lapping a coticule past 600. I used to use a DMTD8C (325) until I wore it out basically but if I was still using a 325 I would stop there. I now use a DMTD8X(220) followed by the DMTD8F(600). For minor corrections I use the 600 but for a full lapping I use the 220 followed by the 600.
