Farm Fresh - Sheaffer PFM

Stopped in at an estate sale during lunch - picked up a few odds and ends and saw this FP in the case by the cash box. It was a bit more then I thought I ought to spend, so I put it back in the case and proceeded to think about it till I got off work and went back there for one more look. Usually on the first day of a sale, they don't like to negotiate and I don't like asking, but in this case I pulled out the old "can you do better?" and for 20% less they had my credit card in hand.

I haven't cleaned it up yet, but I dipped it and gee, it is a smooth writer.

How does the PdAg nib compare with the 14K? For that matter, what does PdAg stand for?

I thought this might be engraving, but through the loupe it looks like printing? I'm sure it will come off when I clean the pen - it could stand some simichrome polishing.

I've read that folks think Sheaffer is third tier, but this pen feels better then that.

Nice looking pen. The marking on the barrel look simmilar to Parker factory chalk markings, but in this case it seems to read PFM and the price underneath $2.50 or $12.50

That sure does look like the factory markings, and a NOS Pen. Whomever said Sheaffer was a 3rd tier is crazy. Excellent pens and PFM is the pick of the litter !

I don't know what you paid, but I suspect you got a great bargain. The PFM is considered one of Sheaffer's best. And Sheaffer is definitely NOT a third-tier manufacturer. They've produced millions of fountain pens, from inexpensive "school pens" to high-end, precious-metal, luxury pens and they're all highly regarded. First-tier all the way!

The factory markings are called "chalk marks" and are designed to be easily rubbed off, so the pen you have has either never been used, or used very little. Great score!

Ditto what others are saying here. The PFM was Sheaffer's best at the time and it looks like you've gotten a PFM III or IV. If you don't want it I'd be happy to buy it off you. I love my vintage Sheaffer (Imperial 829) - it's the pen that helped start James' journey. :) Great score, I'm definitely jealous!

Cheers,

M.

Thanks guys!

I opened up the body and gently poked the bladder, seems nice and pliant. So I soaked the nib, flushed it in warm water till it ran clear, and since it was previously loaded with a blue ink, I loaded it up with BBB. What a nice pen!

That manufacturer's 'chalk' mark, since I'm going to be using it - unlike some of my brushes and razors - there isn't any harm in my polishing the barrel is there?

Oh, to correct my mistake about Sheaffer being third tier, I mis-remembered. It was Esterbrook that I read that about.

No harm in some light hand-polishing but it will wear off on its own.

Esterbrook isn't considered third-tier either, at least in my opinion.

Excuse me while I sputter incoherently for a while at that one.:scared:

Very nice Sheaffer, though. They made quite a few models which I'd like to acquire one day.
