Family Heirloom: NOS Gillette Aristocrat (1953?)

So, was talking with my dear mother on the phone today and casually mentioned the 1917 Aristocrat I found earlier in the antique store a couple weeks back. She said "Gillette? Your grandma's sister gave me an old Gillette razor that her husband had. He used to work for Gillette."

Needless to say, my ears perked right on up. With me on the phone (drooling) she went to her drawer and pulled out a brand stinking new, never been used, Aristocrat, complete with case, razors... everything. I'm not sure what year it is. I know it's British (made in England, she said) and it looks like a 1953. I've never seen the case, though.

Apparently he left this with his wife before he died, and she gave it to my mom before she passed away. I'm so thrilled to be getting something that's not only a family heirloom, but is a gorgeous razor that I'll use and love, as well. Then, I'll give it to one of my own children, natch. I know, I know. A NOS razor is a terrible thing to waste. But, it makes my heart glad using something that was passed down through the family. :)

Any help would be great solidifying the year of this beauty!

Nice! That looks like a #66, my favorite DE! Definitely use it and enjoy it. :thumbup1:

Thanks for sharing that one and Congrats on a great family razor.
Never seen one in a case like that. Kinda patterned after a '58 TV case...cool.

Very cool find! And it is even better that it is a family heirloom. I'm pretty new to the British Aristocrats, but I've never seen one in a case like that. And it does look almost identical to the '58 TV case. I'm curious now to find out more about it as well...

Thanks for the comments, gang. My mom said she had it packaged and ready to go, and will ship it out tomorrow. I'll take some pics with the SLR when it gets here. The case does look identical to the '58 TV case. I'm interested to see if the white box that it came in provides any clue as to its origins. My mom said she couldn't see anything beyond "Aristocrat" being on the box. I'm wondering if maybe it was a demo box that was shipped out without the fancy packaging that most Aristocrats come in... I think she said he sold them, so that could be the case. I'll have to get some more info from her - see if she remembers anything else. Anyway, should be here in a couple days - I'll keep you all posted. :)

Beautiful!
It may in some cases be an unfortunate thing to deflower a NOS razor, but I happen to think it's more unfortunate to NOT use an heirloom razor. What better way to remember those through whose hands it has passed than by using it for its intended purpose?

Regardless, congratulations!

Yep a #22/#66 by the looks of it.

The box ( in British terms ) looks like a Parat box.

Very interesting......... :001_smile

Very nice find and a great family heirloom.
