Ever Ready Streamline v. Gem 1912

I currently have a Gem 1912 SE razor and was wondering if there were any differences in the quality using the Streamline. Would it be worth getting a Streamline if you already have a 1912?

Quality... you betcha..... No comparison between the two. Streamline is the finest quality SE razor ever made

Shave wise..... I sold my streamline but I still have my 1912 :001_smile

you can also buy 5 variations of a 1912 (star, er, junior, damaskeene, gem) for less than half price of a streamline....

I love my Streamline for its quality and heft. As far as shave quality, my GEM OC Damaskeene and OCMM give me as great a shave as the Streamline.

1912 is great - streamline is more aggressive and much nicer tool than the 1912 and far superior all around. Very different animals both worthy to have.

+ 1, get both: Streamline = Moderately aggressive. 1912 (especially the Damaskeene) = Smooth

Depends on what you want. In terms of shave quality I don't think there's enough difference to pay for a Streamline. I just shaved with a Damaskeene and the shave was great, in fact. In terms of heft, quality of plating, etc the Streamline is one of the nicest (maybe the nicest) razor I've ever used. Is it worth what they're going for now? I don't know. I will say I overpaid for mine and I'm happy to have it.

OK Turtle, you're gonna set me off on my PTSD talking about Streamlines! "Slowly I turned...step by step...inch by inch..."

With 2152 posts to your name, do you really have to ask?

In my limited experience: Streamlines are hefty, beautifully made, nice to hold, and give an excellent shave. They're also relatively rare and very expensive these days, tho I was happy to pay a lot for mine. I'd be delighted to own more of them, as they are pieces of razor art.

Although the design, build quality and finish of the razor beat any other Gem/Ever-Ready I'm familiar with, the streamline is not necessarily a better shaver than the others. My Damaskeene definitely shaves as well, and though it takes a light touch, my OCMM can shave even closer.

It really depends on how much disposable income you have. Open comb micromatics are super cheap and plentiful on ebay, and they look nice and they shave amazingly close. Damaskeene's cost a little more, but you can't go wrong with them. I have a 'Brooklyn' which shaves exactly like my Damaskeene-- and it cost very little.

If we talk 1912, we can add in the GEM Damaskeene which stands up a bit better to the Streamline. Aesthetics go to the Streamline, which carries that British regality. The Damaskeene is Yankee through and through...rough, rusty, but a damn good shaver.

IMO, the Streamline is the best SE razor - bar none. Close, smooth, and comfortable shaves. Plus, the razor looks great.

Streamline is just a cool razor to own.
I actually prefer the shave of my Damaskene just a bit more....BUT
and this is a big but...to hold that Steamline in your hand...wow!
It's big, heavy, shiny and magnificent.
It shaves like a big old Harley rides.
Actually, I just used mine this morning, and whatever I paid for it (which was probably way too much)...was worth it.

There are two major types of razors hunters...the frugal ones who search out the best shavers for the least money. These guys like the 1912s, the MMs, the G-Bar, Featherweight, E Type injectors, etc.

Then there's the big spender collector/hobbyists. They relish throwing $$$$ at the Cobra, the Streamlines, cased Hydro-Magic 500, etc.

These two groups look at facial hair removal in very different ways...so discussions on the cost/benefits of a given razor never reach a consensus.

But...its fun arguing.

One of the best razors i ever had, i started with a straight, then a Gem1912 and thanks to B&B's's Ervargas i have a Streamline. I will never sell it.
