I saw an Ever-Ready Shovel Head in an antique shop the other dday and purchased it out of curiosity. I never shaved with a SE andwas wondering what to expect with this particular model.

There are many threads discussing the virtues of different SE razors. The 1924 is a great razor and I don't see the reason why you shouldn't start with that.

expect very good faceshaves and the urge to headshave with it!
expect to wonder if you need to start swapping out some of your DE razors for some SE razors.

Would it be possible to get a longer handle for this?
Not my favorite SE razor. Didn't get the performance of others and had some burn and other issues with it. Blade selection is key for me...must be carbon steel. You may be different but I'd start with carbon.

I did get a very good face shave with this. It brings to mind of shaving with my 39C with a fresh blade in it.
Hmmm, I just saw one of these today at the Flea Market. I might have to go back and pick it up. I feel like such an amateur when it comes to SE.
