Etiquette question

im in an open plan office as we speak - i guess if youve got to blow your nose, youve got to blow your nose. its not like if you have a cold you can go outside every 5 minutes etc.

probably just do it as quietly as possible?

In my opinion, the appropriate thing to do is step out and go to the restroom. I would also accept the stairwell or an empty office or conference room. We may all still hear it, but at least they tried.

It would probably be safer to blow your nose right in the office. If you started for the door you might sneeze and get it on everyone! Another option would be to take one of those 12 hour decongestants that claim not to make you drowsy.

I think it depends on the reason, one think is if you cot a cold, then I think it's OK, otherwise I yhink you should go to the restroom etc.

Etiquette for nose blowing? Just go for it! I'd rather someone blew their nose with a decent tissue than walk about snuffing and snorting!

It's not like you're picking your nose is it?

Agreed! If you need to blow your nose just do it. Unless you can feel your gonna have to put some effort into it then go to the bathroom!

1. Obtain tissue or handkerchief. The former is preferred for hygenic reasons.

2. Blow nose, ensuring that all discharged materials are captured by tissue or handkerchief.

3. Dispose of tissue in such a way that discharged materials are covered by other parts of the tissue and thus invisible to others who might use or see your wastebasket. If using handkerchief, repalace in pocket or briefcase.

4. Resume work.

I would not suggest running to the bathroom or hallway simple to sneeze or blow your nose. The fact is that sneezing is usually unexpected so you are more likely to simple sneeze is transit or on someone's desk. What I would suggest is bringing a handkerchief and sneezing/blowing into that. I know handkerchiefs get a bad rap for being unsanitary but they keep your germs away from others and confined to the fabric.

In addition, I would have a bottle of hand sanitizer visible on your desk so others can see you are making an effort to stop the spread of germs. Use the hand sanitizer in an exaggerated manner anytime you sneeze or blow your nose.
