I saw one on Amazon for about $20. A Conair. And the professional spa/barber ones are like $150-$200. Anybody use such a contraption to heat their canned lather or gel?

I bought a Conair about a year ago. I think you get your money's worth. I haven't had any problems or malfunctions. and the lather is warm. It ain't HOT like the machine at the barber shop. I also checked on a barber shop machine and they require too much upkeep, for me, to only use once a day.
My problem with the Conair is limited space. These machines have to be fairly big and TALL to hold the large cans so if your counter space is limited you might have a problem. I think they do a better job with foam than with gel, but they work with both.
