EJ And Slim - Am I Crazy?

So my main two razors are the EJ and the Slim. Now both are solid razors and get tons of praise on these forums but if you ask most people, it seems they prefer the Gillette Adjustables (Fat, Slim, Super) over just about any other modern day DE or 3-piece. I really think my EJ is a superior shave over my Slim. I prefer the extra weight of the head and the solid feel. I prefer the soft raking sound of the EJ over the popping sound of the Slim when the hairs are shaved. I like the EJ so much that I want to get another one in Barley just to have another one! I feel like I'm the only one that prefers this modern 3-piece over a vintage adjustable....am i crazy? :001_huh:

I don't think you're crazy. If a lot of people like a particular razor, they will talk about it. People who use mostly modern razors. or don't have vintage razors, don't talk about vintage razors much. So it looks like everybody is shaving vintage. I don't have a vintage razor and I don't feel I need one. (Doesn't mean that I don't want one :biggrin1:)

It is all about what works best for you. If most people prefer a vintage razor, it doesn't mean that you have too.

I'll sign this. I haven't found any other razor that can knock my EJ off it's top spot, and I just don't want to spend the $$$ it costs for really rare vintage razors or high end modern stainless razors. I could not be happier with the EJ and, like you, am thinking of picking up a backup because, eventually, they're going to change them or stop making them entirely.

Nah, you're not crazy. Many go through it. Do I like my Slim, ubetcha! Do I prefer to use an open comb? Yes. btw , the Barley is pretty. Enjoy!

I get great shaves out of my Slim and do like the flare tip design, but the sound (hollow echo popping) and the lighter weight makes it FEEL inferior to my EJ. I know the brass Slim will probably survive better than the pot-metal EJ, but the look and feel seems superior to me with my EJ. I still enjoy and love my Slim but if I had to choose just one to use forever, it would be my EJ.

Maybe the next step is to find a nice stainless steel razor...but that will be later down the road for me.

The EJ89 is a nice razor. They're finished superbly. I changed out the handle for a stainless, just because I much prefer the grippiness and the weight. (But if you do that, be careful about over-tightening; the stainless seems capable of tearing off the threaded post of the EJ head). I think the original, in my case Barley, handle looks great.

I think I prefer the Slim. I definitely prefer the *idea* of the Slim... they're marvels of engineering for the adjustability. and I like the plated brass construction. I like to be able to do a pass with it set all the way open, which is still kind of "moderate" on the aggression scale.

But I don't know if I really get better shaves with it than with the EJ razor. And the bottom of the baseplate on those DE89s looks really cool. De gustibus....

And if you're crazy, don't worry about it.

I don't have anything in my recent memory to compare it to, but I do like it. I'm also partial to the simplicity and beauty of the three-piece design myself, just in general.

I'd been shaving with my EJ Chatsworth (chrome handle) for years before I came across B&B. Then over the last few months I've picked up and shaved with a range of old Gillettes -- ball-end Tech, British Superspeed, Canadian fat handle Tech, British Aristocrat. I've really liked them (especially the last two), but the thing is, when I go back the the EJ Chatsworth again, I just like it a bit better. It's solid, heavy, comfortable to shave with, and very effective. If you like the EJ89 and you're thinking of buying another, consider a Chatsworth chrome.

On the other hand, I've just bought my first slim adjustable, so the Gillettes could still win out in the end!

The EJ89 is a classic
And, I know I'm only dreaming here but.............
If Edwin Jagger made an EJ89 in stainless steel, I'm sure it would be a best seller!

Mentioned in the I Wish thread a few days back. Made me wonder if, when, what would Edwin Jagger do to update or expand their line and encourage people like me to buy another razor from them. As it is I'll use the DE89 until it breaks or something. But I would buy one in stainless or brass in a heartbeat.

These are the only two razors I own. I prefer the EJ over the Slim, but only slightly. They both shave great. I tend to use the EJ more than the Slim. I would be happy with either one, if I had to chose only one.

Nope, you aren't crazy! i also prefer the moderns over the vintage ones, also.
Wait until you try a Weber, then your EJ89 might seem a bit light. Good luck.

EJs are terrific razors and are modern classics.
You are not crazy!

Their online retail site, The English Shaving Company,
is offering free shipping for the next couple of weeks.
Great time to order that backup!

Thanks for the tip! They seem to pop up a lot in the BST so I'll try there first to see if I get lucky.

I like the Edwin Jagger as well, though I feel the Weber is slightly better, worth giving the Weber a try as well if you are at all worried about the longevity of the Edwin Jagger, they shave quite similar with the Weber being slightly (very slightly) more aggressive (efficient) plus it is stainless steel, IMO and YMMV.
