What's new

Edwin Jagger

$45 for a "Best" badger brush
$68 for a "Super" badger brush

Which would you spring for? Right now I have a Boar Bristle Brush that does OK, but I have almost no experience since I'm a newbie at this.

Does the badger brush really make that much difference?

I go with the super. Its a step up from the best, and you'll be happy with it, and glad you did. Its just an all around better brush without getting into the more expensive silvertips. :w00t:  :001_rolle

If at all possible, pony up extra $23 and get the Super. Otherwise, you'll always be wondering "what if..." and you'll probably end up getting it anway within a very short time. I have an Edwin Jagger made Super Badger. It rocks!

What about moving all the way to a Silvertip? What is the best for making lather? Is the Silvertip the way to go?

I have had both the EJ medium best and super brushes. The super is the better brush. The EJ silvertip brushes have smaller handles unless you get the Chatsworth and quite a bit more price. The super is the sweet spot in performance/value.

I have an EJ super and don't like it at all. It's brilliant for creating a lather in a bowl but useless for face lathering. Once you have bowl lathered, it is OK to paint the lather on your face, but it is useless for preparing your face. I would definitely go for the best ... or a Rooney super (which has better backbone for face lathering and will also bowl lather).

I recommend getting a Rooney (1/1) in Super Silvertip, since you're already considering a $68 brush. In that price range, there are far better brushes than anything EJ makes. For just a little more ($75 or so), you can get a custom Shavemac with Finest hair. Go with a 19mm knot diameter and 45mm loft. Just email Bernd at Shavemac with those dimensions and pick a handle style and color from anything on the Shavemac website. EJ brushes are not very dense and tend to be floppy. If you ever face lather, you'll be happier with a Rooney or a custom short-loft Shavemac. If you never face lather, a Rooney or custom Shavemac work wonderfully with a bowl, too. See the reviews in my signature, as well, if you want some more custom Shavemac info.

Good luck with it.
