Edwin Jagger Shaving Creams, Not So Good?

So I've tried multiple times to get these EJ cream samples I have to work and every time I build up what looks like a good lather it ends up being really thin and vanishing before the second pass.
It was so bad today that I had to switch to some New York Shaving Company Tonsorial cream to finish up. I've had this experience consistently with both the sandalwood and sea buckthorn scents.
I usually start with about an almond size on the slightly damp brush (whipped dog silvertip, 24mm, 45mm loft), then add water gradually as I work it into a lather that looks good and feels good at first. However, once I try to transfer it to my face it comes out really thin and by the time I go back for a second pass it's hardly there at all. It also had very little slickness or cushion.
Anyone else have this experience? I've not had any trouble with any T&H sample I've tried, nor the TOBS or NYSC creams I have.

EJ (and Muhle) aren't known for being super foamy, but more on the slick side. The general consensus is that they just aren't worth the cash, though.

I've only used the aloe scent EJ cream, but imagine it lathers the same as the others. Maybe it comes down to the water. For me, it's one of my super reliable products. I never seem to get a bad lather. If I liked the smell a little better it'd probably be my favorite, but it's kinda sickeningly sweet scented.

I've gone through a tub of EJ Sandalwood cream and it was the slickest, most moisturizing cream I've ever used (out of about 25 I've tried). These creams really don't require much water. A slightly damp brush and face is all that's needed to get it going. I loved the scent, but found it to be a bit too moisturizing, especially paired with the ASB. My face felt like it was sweating after using it. Perhaps I used a bit too much product (if that's possible??). I hadn't planned on replacing my tub because I have so many other creams to get through.

I have limited experience with a sample, but I was totally underwhelmed. I would put it near the bottom of all creams I've tried.
