Edwin Jagger DE89 vs Merkur 180

I need some input. I would like to buy the Edwin Jagger DE89lbl. To me it looks like an excellent blade and the bottom plate or comb plate looks to be heavier and thicker then the Merkur 180. However, I like a long handled razor of 4" or more. The EJ is not quite so. Any suggestions? I've thought of buying a long handle from Maggard and putting it on the EJ. I am confused! Please help.

Try looking at the Merkur 38C. Much beefier than the 180, and has a nice long handle.

I've had both. The skinny handle of the 180 didn't didn't for me. The Ej barely on the other hand was just fine. This has never slipped. You can also try the ikon bulldog handle.

I just bought the 180 for my first razor, so I don't have anything to go on, but I am already looking at other razors...

as you've mentioned, each has its pros and cons
i have had both
started with the 180 and bought the EJ89 barley chrome cos of looks about a year later
both shave well, the EJ feels slightly more aggressive to me
the 180 feels more secure in hand with its knurling but i never dropped either
i sold the EJ to a buddy who liked the looks
i saw no point keeping both and the extra year with the 180 meant it was more comfy to shave with for me

another option is to buy a Muhle R89 Grande
its got a longer and thicker handle than the EJ89, similar grip as well
same head and quality finish too
Muhle supplies EJ the heads for their razors
British online shops ship cheap or free if you spend enough
price is about the same as the EJ barley too
no extra customs/duties either when i purchased
