Edwin Jagger DE89 Question!!!

I ordered an EJDE89BL from Amazon a few days ago. The picture looks as if it has the lined handle. I youtubed it and some guy says he has a "BL" version and its the smooth handle. Everywhere I look I get conflicting information. I'd be happy with either one I just wanna know! Thanks for any info!

I believe the "bl" simply means your EJ ships with a pack of blades. For example, I have one with the lined handle, and it was listed as Edwin Jagger DE89LBL. The "L" before the "BL" means the razor has a lined handle.

It does look like the EJDE89BL is the unlined version, but that picture on amazon does look like it has lines. I had to stare at the larger pictures of the BL vs. LBL to see the difference.

Even the lined version is pretty smooth. I have it. I haven't seen the non lined chrome version except in pictures on the net. The lined version has lines, but the chrome is still kind of smooth. The barley pattern on most Gillette techs is grippier. I think that the non lined version will look even shinier than the lined version, which looks pretty shiny as it is.

But all of that said, I haven't really had any problems with slippage with the handle. I have read a lot of people posting about whether or not the handle gets slippery... For me this has not been an issue. The handle might start to get a little slippery if soap and water get on it, but I just rinse it in the sink and keep going. The lines don't actually seem like they make a ton of difference in terms of grip.

For me, the lined ej has been an excellent razor. Regardless of whether you get the lined version or the unlined version, I'm sure you will get an excellent razor.

Look at the item description- it will tell you if it is the lined version. I have an unlined one- both beautifull and a great razor! Enjoy!

I have the Unlined DE89 and it works just fine for me ... it is a beautiful hefty razor - love mine!

Of course, I'm not super sloppy with soap either like some folks - whose names I won't mention (for less than $5 USD).

Whatever way you look at it the Edwin Jagger DE89 is a great into razor to DE shaving. I feel now, 6 months into DE that it is a 'friend'!!! I don't talk to it or anything mind you! I get great shaves and know it pretty well regarding my face and technique by now.

On close inspection I think the EJ DE89 is in fact a Muhle head, they look identical and I am now wondering if all EJ's are Muhle heads. ED don't seem to do any other heads only closed comb and the only difference seems to be the range of handles they offer. It says EJ have been making shaving products since 1988, did they do DE razors back then? Any if so does anyone have one from 1988 or 1995 etc? Be interesting to find out. I can't find any info online except what the site and B&B contributors say.

The one I ordered a while ago from amazon was the DE89BL, as of right now it's the one with 100 reviews. It does not have lines on the handle, just smooth chrome.

I had EJ DE89LBL before I traded it... ordered through Amazon. As a previous poster stated. The "L" after 89 shows it has the lined handle, and the BL shows it ships with blades.... So a LBL would be lined with blades, the BL would be the smooth handle with blades.

Whichever you get, if it feels slippery, just touch your fingers to an alum bar before you pick it up and it be very secure.

I have one with Barley Chrome. I love it!!!

It was the first DE i ever bought and I still buy old Gillettes and try them out, but the EJ89 is my go-to measuring tool.

I agree with this assessment. Here is a thread about it two years ago.

When I was buying mine I thought the smooth chrome was the best looking handle and ordered it. The vendor was out of them so upgraded me to the Lined handle DE89 instead for the price of the smooth chrome! Looks don't always count, but the smooth chrome is a cool looking baby!
