What's new

Edwin Jagger 89 or Merkur Slant

I am in the market for a new everyday razor. I like a very close shave and I think I want something more aggressive than the 40's SS that I have been using.

With that said I am looking at getting either an 89L or a Merkur Slant.

I know they are very different but I read that they are both great everyday shavers.

Thoughts?

I recently bought a Mühle R89, wich has the same head as the EJ 89L.
I can tell you that is a great performer. Quality top notch. I'm loving it.

I can only speak from my experience, so there's my disclaimer for this statement:

Six one way, half a dozen the other.

I don't own the EJ89, but I must say that my 39c slant has never let me down, and always gives a close shave.

They really are very different razors, I love the DE89L it's a quality piece of kit and would have no hesitation recommending it.

I found that my beard growth was not heavy enough for the slant, it is aggressive but not something to be afraid of providing you treat it with respect.

Check out the reviews and comments on B&B and consider which will work best for you.

From what I've read their two completely different razors. One is relatively mind, the other is quite specifically made for thick beards. The answer probably lies in what kind of growth, and skin you have.

Lobster has it right...the two are VERY different razors...though I've never used a slant, I do own an Edwin Jagger DE89L and it's pretty tame. This works for me because I have relatively light facial hair. Now, speaking from experience, the EJ is an amazing razor and balances aggressiveness with restraint almost perfectly, so unless you have monster facial hair I can't see you not liking it. Not to mention that my EJ is a total piece of art...flawless in all aspects. I say +1 for the EJ.

They are both excellent razors but they are different. The Edwin Jagger DE89 give an excellent shave but I wouldn't describe it as aggressive. The Slant will give a clser shave but can come at a price if you're in a hurry or don't concentrate.

My advise is to get both.

If you are specifically looking for something more aggressive a Slant would be the way to go. If your just looking for a very fine razor you will have to get both!

I have both and I prefer the EJ. Here is my comparison.

The Slant - A very effective razor, especially with a Feather blade. It was my go-to choice for about a year. It would mow through my wire bristles on a Monday morning with no resistance whatsoever. With the touch up however, I have to be very careful - too quick or the tiniest bit too much pressure leaves me sore. Take your time however and you are rewarded with an excellent shave.

The EJ - The first thing I noticed was the quality of craftsmanship. The chrome plate is both thick and flawless. Not only does this look good, but it provides a very smooth shave. Although it is less aggressive than the slant, it is still very effective, even with Derbys or IPs. The slightly milder shave means that it is more forgiving, therefore easier for touch up, therefore quicker overall.

I'm not saying that the slant is completely useless, but for me it takes too long to get a really good shave, bethought the final result is probably a touch better than the EJ. Can I be bothered with the extra 10 minutes that gives me a hourcs smoother face? Having found the EJ, I now have 2 redundant slants (one short & one long handled). I will probably sell one, but keep the other for those long slow, BBS shaves.

Hope that helps

My preference is for the slant in terms of shaving ability. However, if craftsmanship is a priority then the Edwin Jagger is better in that regard.

Your summary is what I was expecting based on the other reviews on this site. I don't have the money for both right now and I was thinking that I would get the EJ first and probably get a slant at some point. More than which one to get I guess my question is which one to get first.

My technique is improving everyday and I just re watched Mantic's 10 minute traditional wet shave video again last night. The refresher course led to a BBS shave this morning with a Feather in my SS.

Thanks for the help guys I think I'm going to go for a EJ for now.

I think the EJ is a great next razor, especially if you're accustomed to the Super Speed, which is pretty mild. The DE89L is mild enough, but very effective. Plus, if you get it from the English Shaving Company's website before June 16th, the total cost is less than thirty dollars, since they've got free shipping right now.

Got me a slant...
Fantastic.
Lovelt close shave, hassle free. Works a treat with my Gillette orange/Feather blades. Haven't tried a EJ89 yet, and with me liking the slant so much, doubt i will.
