eBay Vs Antiquing

I don't know about the rest of you, but I feel a certain attachment to the razors that I find in antique shops. I feel almost as if I've rescued them from an orphanage for poor, forgotten razors, and given them a good home. I don't feel that way about my eBay razors. Perhaps it's the thrill of the hunt and the joy of discovery inherent in antiquing. eBay just makes things a bit too easy, and that which we gain too easily we esteem to lightly. Any thoughts?

I agree with you. Though I was happy with the one razor purchase that I made on Ebay, the eight razors that I found in antique stores came with a story (e.g., the two fat boys that I found for $3.50 each ). Like you, I also came away with the feeling that I was rescuing these razors to put them back into action. Plus, I find it relaxing to spend an occasional hour in an antique store/mall looking for such treasures.

Unfortunately in my area we do not have a great selection of antique stores to choose from. Those that are near by, when they do carry razors & brushes, have them priced so high as to be un-reasonable, even when compared against EBay. So while I like the thought of buying $3.00 - $10.00 vintage razors and brushes, it's not realistic here.

First off, eBay takes a lot of punishment, but let's face it, we sell there because we get the highest price & we buy there because no matter what you're looking for, you'll find it there.

I do buy razors & other things related to my other hobbies from all over the internet. But its no where near as rewarding as findning something in a antiquestore/thriftshop/junk-outlet.

Today, if you only have the money for it, you can build a great collection of for example jazz LPs in a year.
A collection that 20 years ago would have taken 20 years to build, no matter how much money you had to spend.
Good? Bad? Up to you...

Yeppers, agree entirely. 90% of my finds are local finds and I can tell you exactly where and when I found them and under what circumstances. Each one has a little story to tell no matter how small.

I've only ever bought 2 off Ebay and yep, not the same sense of "attachment" to them.

I agree 100% and since I have a great antique shop selection and junk mall choices I never get razors off e-bay. Only things I cannot get like soap and blades.

I can remember the stalk and capture of all my razors! The hunt is what is fun!

Unfortunately even though I live in a tiny town full of antique stores, none of them have any decent razors or brushes. I did find a very good condition travel tech without case for $4 and a old grimy plastic handled SS for $2 that cleaned up pretty good. There was a pakistani straight razor, just the blade minus the scales that I didn't even ask how much for. That's it out of 6 shops.
