Double/Single sided? Help needed

Hi Folks,
Some advice needed please.

I have a couple of Dovo Straights (a special and the white imitation mother of pearl one with gold writing on it, can't remember the model name).

I have a hanging strop and I am ok with keeping it stropped but don't want to take the step to buy and learn the honing just yet, so I send them out to a great guy called Steve in Malvern here in the UK.

I have only sent these razors once each when I got them from new(ish)- so they were nowhere near shave ready.

So that is the background, now my question....

I have seen a couple of Thierrs Issard paddles , one is double sided the other is single.

Will these give me a longer lasting edge between hones? And I am guessing the answer to this is 'yes'?

So, which one to get and why, bearing in mind a £10 price difference for the double?

And finally, which paste for the paddle?

Many thanks folks

Regards

Jem

The only true way to increase the edge longevity is to get better at stropping.

To get the maximum edge longevity between honings, you need a cloth/linen component. Two leathers won't get you there. Doesn't matter too much if they're hanging or not.

So, if the edge is dulling and I am doing the hanging stropping correctly, then a paddle strop isn't going to help keep an edge longer ?(I have one side leather the other side linen on my hanging strop)
So, my question of double or single is irrelevant in this case
Thanks
Jem

single/double is irrelevant, unless you paste one - but pastes wont help if your stropping technique isnt down.

you may find it easier to have good technique on a paddle strop however... BUT.. so you dont have to buy a new one, while youre learning you can lay the strop down along the edge of a table (and then once youve got the hang of it hang it back up

If its already dulling, you are correct. Well, unless you want to do what MParker did and do several thousand laps or something like that on a linen strop.

Anyway, already sounds like you have all the tools you need. You don't need to buy any more. Unless you want to just have it.........:thumbup1:

Sorry, we're enablers here. Can't let you go too easily.

Many thanks for those pointers.
I was under a misapprehension that the paddle was somehow going to give me a 'bit extra' over the hanging strop.
I think I will take the advice, and keep with the hanging strop.

With a paddle there is no worry about the strop being too slack or too taut.
Too slack isn't good and too taut can cup a hanger, also not good. Good reasons to put a hanger on a table when first starting. Or just dive right in and pay attention to how much pull you put on your hanger.

I think hangers are more fun to use, paddles can be more "precise", and prefer a paddle for pastes or traveling. Either works.

Do you prefer the linen/crox over cotton/crox combo?

Good question. I don't think theres much difference to be honest. Not one I can tell anyway. Haven't tried the wool/crox yet to my knowledge. That one might be worth investigating.
