hi,
i have seen alot negative write ups on Dorco blades, but i have seen some good reviews on the ST 301 type.any thoughts from the folks out there? thanks
I think there have been some threads on them in the razor blade subforum. They are a pretty polarizing blade- it seems either they work for you or you hate them. I myself like the 301s and have several hundred of them around here someplace.
I tied them, my brother tried them; for us the blades held a pull-and-tug fest on 24-hour stubble, we both feel Dorco ST301s were the worst blades, ever. I never made it through my first pass--they felt like they had serrated edges!
I'd sooner use Astras to Dorcos for almost the same price; and prefer SuperMax SP blades to all blades.
If Dorcos work for you, you can buy them inexpensively. Best thing to do is buy some and give 'em a go. Regardless of what any of us say, the only way you'll know whether or not you'll like Dorco ST301 blades is to try one.
They were my first bulk purchase, 150 for $10.00 on eBay. (A long story, and a deal no longer available). I'm about halfway through those 150, and use them mostly in travel mode, either at the health club or on the road. I get two DFS to BBS and then toss them. Can't quite stretch one to three shaves. Based on the rating numbers of the guy over at SMF, they are in that middle sweet spot, like Crystals, BICs, Treet Platinums, some of the 7 o'clocks, or Sharks. It's also one of the more forgiving blades I've tried, exceeded only by the BIC. When my stash is gone, not sure when I'll get some more, as I have plenty of other blades to use up.
If you have a light beard, the Dorco ST301 works really well. It's not the sharpest blade, but it is extremely forgiving. I never get razor burn when I use this blade. To me, it's like a Super Iridium (smoothness) only not as sharp. If these were sharper, everyone would be raving about how great they are. That's why it's so polarizing. If you have a light beard, it's perfect for you, but if you have a tough beard, it won't work well.
I gave the Dorco ST301 a go in my Dreadnought Spartan this morning, and concur with some of the others' feedback - very forgiving, no razor burn. And actually closer than I envisioned. I envision degradation quickly via my coarse beard, so likely one and toss with these, but I was pleasantly surprised - not a bad choice to add to my rotation from time to time.
COMMENTS FOR SECOND SHAVE: Not quite as close this time around - a number of repeated passes, but pulling only in the upper lip ATG. Good to very good through the WTG and XTG, kind of dying out by ATG and beyond. Two shaves and out!
I personally love ST-301s. They give me an almost identical shave to the Astra Superior Platinums. They work great for me, but YMMV. PM me your address, and I'll PIF you a 10 pack. I've got enough left to last me until my recent order arrives so I'm happy to help if you're interested in trying them. All I ask in return, is that you post your experience with the ST-301s after you have given them a chance. Just PM me if you're interested.
