What's new

Don't like my 1956 TTO gillette.

I can't. seem to get a great shave with this razor. It takes 4 passes plus touch up to get BBS . It just seems way too mild for me I end up getting irriatation trying to get a good shave. I have way better results with my EJ 89. I also have a 1940's feather teavel razor that kicks both of there butts. 2 Passes and I'm close to BBS. I guess I need a more agressive razor. Maybe Santa will bring me one for christmas if I dont buy 2 or 3 Before then. AD

I have tried everything from feathers to derbys. It just doesnt seem to mow down my beard. I have actually switched blades durring the shave. Astra to Wilkinsons, feathers to personnas. I don't think it's. technique. Shave, splash, stubble. Shave splash stubble. etc. before i know it my face is raw.

I have my eye on some merkurs. or maybe a gillette open comb, or I here the red tips are pretty agressive.

I would suggest you find an older OC razor and use a Gillette 7 O'clock Black. Best shave I have ever received and with only 2 passes...BBS!
Good Luck!

This is the razor I've been getting great shaves with. A 1940's feather travel. It just doesn't have a nice fewl to it because of it's. size.
Now welcome the jokes.

No jokes from me...I have a Gillette Travel Tech head mounted on a Tradere handle, and it's an awesome combo.

Put it aside and move on to razors you do get a good shave with. No law says you have to keep trying. In a few months, revisit if you wish.

Lots of tools out there. Try 'em.

The super speed that you are having trouble with is one of my favorites. I have a rather coarse beard and even though it's a very forgiving razor, it works very well. It's the only razor I've been able to go ATG with consistently with no irritation. Have you tried tweaking the blade angle a bit?

Could also be that particular razor had a mishap over the years that knocked the blade alignment katywumpus.
I've got a Gillette Sheraton that is practically useless on one side and uber-aggressive on the other, apparently the center bar got knocked out of whack and favors the blade to one side.
Could also be either a goof at the factory back in 56 that allowed a blue tip head on a normal Superspeed handle or a previous owner cleaned the remnants of a badly chipped paint job off the tip.

The Superspeed you have is considered more aggressive than the Feather, so something is amiss.
Either the Gillette has had a drop test done on it, or your technique for it is way off.
Since you say you are getting raw from it, I'd suggest checking the technique advice.
Generally, at the correct angle, the blade cuts, but at the wrong angle the blades tends to scrape.
This results in poor hair removal performance and razor burn, or getting "raw".

a previous owner cleaned the remnants of a badly chipped paint job off the tip.

The handle on the Blue Tip is Aluminum, so it would be obvious in the Pic.

My bad on that,my only contact with any of the color coded SS's is my 58 Red Tip so I had no idea of what was under the paint.

I have both a '40s style Super Speed and a '50s Tech. Can't get a decent shave with either of them, no matter what blade I use or how careful I am with blade angle. For some of us, these razors are just too mild. As some here have suggested, you may just need a more aggressive razor. I get better results with my EJ DE89 or my Merkur HD than with my vintage razors. I'm currently waiting for my birth-quarter Slim to arrive after replating by Dave from West Coast Razors. I suspect that one will do the trick for me, while also indulging my fancy for vintage things.
