What's new

Dolphin.

... is the name of my favourite horse... He has white neck hair. I like to make chess pieces by woodturning, so I've decided to make a horsehair wooden handle brush. This is the result:

Very nice. What did you use as a sealer, varnish, tung oil, polyurethane, CA (super glue)?

I use a product called POLISTEN (made by Sayerlack). It is used to seal wood directly exposed to weather. It is formulated with fungicide components and it doesn't cover the wood with a film... It is a PERVASIVE stain.

The hair is glued with EPOXI adhesive, that makes a good job waterproofing the cavity.
Over the stain, I use an automotive wax.

Is the knot clipped? And how dense is it? Why dd you leave the black hairs? Is neck hair mane hair?

The hair is just glued on place. After combed, the hair is washed, rinsed and dried by sun. The next step is group it, leveling by base and clamping with a hose clamp. Before sit into the handle cavity, I apply some glue into the base. More glue into the cavity and let's the time do the rest.

Density??? I don't have the slightest idea ;)

Dolphin has few black hair... MANE hair, indeed... I don't use tail hair...

Can you take a picture above the brush with the tip end of the knot toward the camera?
That will help for the viewers to see how dense (how tightly packed) the hairs are.
