Does a razor like this exist?

I hear a lot about razors being more or less aggressive and I understand it's based on the amount of blade being exposed.

So I was thinking...why don't they make a razor head with...one side being open...and the other more closed? Is there some technical/functional reason why that would be a bad idea and do they already exist?

I have seen them from Ikon razors. OPEC comb one side closed comb other side.

Well there goes my patent idea ;-)

I'm surprised they don't seem to be more popular then..it seems ideal to have the flexibility in one head...or maybe it's not?

While it might be fun to try each side, I just ended up trying several razors. Plus, I can switch sides automatically as opposed to flipping the blade every day to get the most out of each blade.

The main problem is that most ppl will end up wanting to use one side more then the other, resulting in pretty much forcing you to use one side for an entire shave, if you can't be bothered to take out the blade and rotate it during the shave.

Is it bad to use one single side for an entire shave? Sometimes during the shave one side fails and I use only the other side, so this wouldn't be a problem other then I would have to change side mid shave so this issue is not against this method. Also, you would have to rinse much more often. I noticed that there are blades out there which don't have exactly the same type of edge on both sides, so you pretty much can't use it to its max potential. The most happy person would be one that likes to shave with both sides during the same shave.

They exist:

My holy grail razor system consists of Weber handle, Feather head and Ikon baseplates. All parts replated in black chrome and used in order: Feather, OSS, OC and SB every 3-4 shaves.

Gibbs razors, made in France, had a three piece, "closed comb" model that had an aggressive side and a mild side. The top of the head was stamped with a "+ "on the aggressive side, and a "- "on the mild side. Pretty cool design, but they used a proprietary blade design. I'll see if I can post a pic later.

Love the look of this combination.
You mention you got it replated in black chrome - maybe it's just the lighting but it looks rather 'silvery' still. Is it possible to replate chrome to a much more dark/black look?

It's very hard to get the feeling of the plating on pictures, as it is in real life. I (and at least one other member here) was initially quite surprised by the 'silveriness' - but I haven't asked Dave at www.restoredrazors.com if it would be possible to alter the color to more black.

I took this picture to compare the color to a EJ chrome/faux ivory handle that my son owns:

The difference to ordinary chrome is that this black chrome has a more warm tone than the cold ordinary chrome IMHO.

I have a merkur vision that is far more aggressive on one side than the other. Mostly because it's an overly complicated design that is nearly impossible to make correctly. WAY TO GO MERKUR!!!! FAIL

I don't think it would look better if it was more black. I've seen you post pictures of this razor a few times now and I like the look of it more and more each time. It would not be as classy in black.

This is also my conclusion. I am extremely fond of the warm tone of the razor compared to the cold tone of the ordinary chrome.

There are more pictures of the razor system in my gallery - just click on the pictures!

I had a merkur HD and progress. They were good. Sold these off as I prefer R41 and Weber (both ends of the aggressive spectrum).

I notice that, with the passing of time, merkur seems to be failing in their QC. Right now I would hesitate to buy anything merkur.

I don't have either of these issues with my iKon.

I use the open side for the WTG and ATG passes.

I use the closed side for the XTG and buff/touch-up passes.

That's 2 passes on each side, each day. No flipping, no uneven attention to either blade edge.

There is more rinsing between passes, I'll grant, but I hardly think that warrants a markdown. Who hasn't rinsed a 34C or 37C or any other symmetrical-head razor before using the second edge?

Get a well used old type Gillette. see if blade wobbles slightly on head. if not, carefully dremel so that it does.
when assembling, nudge blade to one side before the final tightening. have fun figuring which side which.

Hi,

Many of the Solingen, Germany Slant style DE razors have one side more aggressive than the other. In practice one shaves a patch with the more aggressive side then go right back over it with the flip (less aggressive) side. The safety bars have scallops in them with the more aggressive side being larger and fewer in number. They leave enough lather behind for the less aggressive side to work without relathering. Pretty neat. It is exactly like doing a pass with an open comb and then a second pass with a Tech.
