Do you use rubbing alcohol on your neck bumps?

I know everyone stresses that products containing alcohol are not good for the face. I have an area on my lower neck, mainly around my adam's apple, where bumps will not go away. I'm sure these are ingrowns, as the hairs go every which way. I've studied the direction of growth, but I feel like I'm just irritating them, whether I shave every 2 days or every 4 days. If I let my beard grow for even a week, the irritation is worse. I use witch hazel after each shave, followed by Anthony's AS. So my question is: Will rubbing alcohol help if I apply only to the irritated area of my neck? I don't care if it burns, I just want to dry them out. What are the reasons for not using alcohol based products on the neck? Thanks for any help!

I have always found using pure alcohol to be more irritating than beneficial. However, I have very bad skin. I use Thayer's with 10% alcohol after using an alum bar. Then, I too, use Anthony's AS. I have been very impressed with this AS so far. After the initial minty scent, it is almost undetectable. This combination seems to calm my irritation no matter how bad a shave I have gotten.

Have u tried the alum bar as well?

Don't use alcohol. Try Thayers and Anthony's Logistic In-Grown Hair Treatment for a couple days.

Alcohol burns / drys out. You want something that will exfoliate and help the hairs out. Alcohol won't do that.

What's your shave routine? As with all shaving problems, ingrowns are usually caused by poor technique, poor prep or poor equipment, we might be able to narrow it down for you.

First of all, rubbing alcohol is totally different from the alcohol they use in aftershave. The former is isopropanol while the latter is ethanol. Second, if you're dealing with ingrown hairs, nothing is going to get rid of them except preventing them in the first place, or if they're already present, removing the hair from the infected area with a sterilized needle or pair of tweezers, although make sure you don't pull the hair out, otherwise in may become ingrown again.

Honestly, you want to prevent them in the first place, and the best thing for that is good preparation and no pressure when you're using your razor.

I have heard of it, but never tried. Thanks for the info!

It is definitely worth a shot. The alum bar for me made the single most dramatic improvement in my overall post shave routine.

You can get one at a Whole Foods if you have one near you. They have one specific brand that is a deodorant stick, but is made of Potassium Alum/Potash alum. Do not buy one that contains Ammonium Alum as this will produce a much more intense sting... and is used strictly for deodorant purposes... or find it online or an Indian goods store if there is one by you.

Best of luck.

I'll just throw this out there....I am prone to flare ups of folliculitus which results in bumps and ingrowns....My wife is into holistic medicine 100%...She suggested colloidal silver...you can find it at most any health food store...It can be used for acne, pink eye, etc.. When I have flare ups, I apply a few drops to the bumps about 3 times a day....they usually disappear by the end of the day! No sting, burning, etc... It feels like water...but it works well for me! Just an idea.

Is there a product photo by chance? I have a CVS and Walgreens in town...not sure if they'd have it.

This may be covered elsewhere, and if so, I apologize, but what is the benefit in using an alum block??

Sorry, I can't recall the brand. I checked on whole foods website, but they only have a few of their body products listed and the alum is not there.

Wish I could be more helpful.:frown:

In a nutshell, potassium alum is a natural antiseptic. It also causes your skin to pucker and tighten... not a lot, but it feels great and has greatly improved my skin after shaving... just do a quick search on the the general discussion forum and you will find many posts about it.

Unless you're a black male or somebody with very curly hairs, ingrowns are usually caused by not optimal technique, too much stretching of the skin or wrong angle of attack of the razor.

I found I had quite a lot of red bumps in my lower neck at first when starting DE wet shaving. It slowly decreased as I refined my technique and tried different ways and angles of shaving in my neck. Ingrowns have now almost entirely disappeared.

I have used Anthony Logistics Ingrown Hair Treatment twice a day for more than a week and I believe it has also helped a lot in speeding up the recovery process.

You can also try Apple Cider Vinegar. Works wonders on acne, ingrown hair, scars, any kind of skin ailment really.

Interesting! I may give this a shot first.

I really appreciate everyone's advice. I'll be trying out these tips one-by-one. Thanks again!!

Note: Apple Cider Vinegar is also great on sunburn. I know it's not shaving related but applying after sunburn will save you a lot of pain.
