DMT Duo Sharp

I purchased a DMT Duo Sharp 325/600 grit a few years ago to sharpen my kitchen knives. Now that I want to start honing straight razors, I plan on using the 325 grit for lapping my stones. The question is how do I know which side is which. I only used it once or twice and it has been over a year since I used it last. The way it is labeled is one side has a red circle with a blue dot inside it, the other side is a blue circle with a red dot inside it. Does anybody know which color I go by, the color of the circle or the color of the dot to determine which side is the 325, and which side is the 600?

Thanks so much!

Joe

I would imagine that the dot is the key - shouldn't be too hard to test out though. Mine is marked with just dots; black/blue for 325/220 - black is 220.
The key is also stamped into the plastic on mine.

Joe, the Blue is the Coarse 325 and the Red is the Fine 600. I also have a DuoSharp plate and it works great.

  • SILVER (XX) Diamond - Extra-Extra Coarse

    Extreme repair of a very damaged edge (120 mesh, 120 micron)
  • BLACK (X) Diamond - Extra Coarse

    Fix and restore a damaged edge (220 mesh, 60 mircron)
  • BLUE (C) Diamond - Coarse

    Quickly sharpen a neglected edge (325 mesh, 45 micron)
  • RED (F) Diamond - Fine

    Put a keen edge on a maintained tool (600 mesh, 25 micron)
  • GREEN (E) Diamond - Extra Fine

    Sharpen to a razor edge (1200 mesh, 9 micron)
  • WHITE (CER) Ceramic

    Start a polished and refined edge (2200 mesh, 7 micron)

Thanks all for the quick replies. I was thinking that the red was fine (600) and the blue coarse (325). Just kind of weird how they put the opposite color inside of the circle. Really confusing.

Circle = this side
Dot = opposite side

Blue is 325 red is 600.

So the side with a Blue circle with red dot is 325, red circle with blue dot is 600.

When did you get yours? Their labeling scheme must have changed at some point. I've got one from about three years back and another from a few months back (second hand purchase, but it was basically new condition so I assume recently bought). They both used the circle+Dot method. I wouldn't be surprised if they axed it and went to just marking each side their own color to avoid confusion, since if you REALLY can't remember what is on the other side of your Duo, flipping it isn't all that hard.

I've had it a good long while. The 10" Duo I picked up 2 yr ago didn't have the circle/dot thing either. Just a dot on each side.
