DIY 4 Sided Paddle Strop

I was in Home Depot this week ans stumbled on a baluster in the lumber section for $1.50. It looked to be the perfect size and shape for [2] Four Sided Paddle Strops...

Basic list of things I used...

[1] Baluster cut in half
100/12-0/150/220/320 grit sand paper

A couple quick questions... now that I have the paddle cut and sanded....

1. Do I apply paste directly to the paddle? Or do I glue down some balsa then paste?
2. What pastes should I get for each side?
3. Any recommendations on where to buy the pastes?

I don't know about 2 and 3, but you will need to glue a thin layer of balsa to all four sides before applying the paste. Nice find btw

You should either get some canvas/cotton component or leather to glue onto that to apply the paste to.

Would you look at say a Joanna Fabrics type place for that?
