Discussion Thread for 6/8 TI Frame/square/Worked Back...

This is a discussion thread for THIS review. Note: Over the next few days I will be posting quite a few straight razor reviews. We only have a few as of now... lets work together and beef it up fellas!

Where are these blades available? I'm interested in getting a TI and this one seems really attractive (so long as the price isn't too far out of this world). I couldn't find it at classicshaving.:frown:

And Joel can you be a bit more specific on what it would take to hone one of these. I have a 4k/8k and a pasted paddle. What would you recommend?

Oh and thanks for the reviews of the straight razors, this site is sorely lacking in them. I'll try to put up a review of my 5/8 cheapo Dovo soon.

It's in the limited editions section on classic.

The norton and a pasted paddle will do fine. Diamond, boron carbide, or chrome oxide all work well. I'm partial to boron carbide with a final polishing of 2-3 light laps on chrome oxide, but some guys prefer 1 and .5 micron diamond.

Well - that one in particular with a square/worked back isn't. A few years ago when I bought it though - it was only about $85. Prices sure have gone up haven't they! You can get the square backed model which has a similar blade in the "limited" section at classic - it is called the "frameback" - however it will have stamina scales, NOT blonde horn.

As far as honing - every razor is different. I've had some TI's that needed just a minute or two of work - and others that have taken a week or so to tune up just right. How much honing experience do you have? What kind of paste do you have on the paddle? TI's can be a bit tricky....

I'm really a fan of TI's - especially with horn scales... if you pick up the standard 6/8 TI with horn scales - it'll look sharp and be very reasonably priced. See pic below...

Can't wait to see your Dovo reviews!

$85!!!

I should have gotten into this straight razor thing sooner.

As far as my honing experience goes I have honed up two cheapo ebay razors (one ERN and the other a Gold Bug) to shave ready condition, but thats about it.

I was actually thinking of getting the 7/8 TI spike (as this would kill two birds with one stone since I don't have a TI or a 7/8 blade). My paddle (that I got from Tony Miller) has 1m, .5m and .25m diamond paste. What do you think? Should I just use Classic's honing service when I hunker down and purchase it or do you think I can do it on my own.

More important than the money, I actually like the idea of working on my own razors so I'd much rather hone it myself.

The diamond paste should do the trick. TI's can be disceving though - for instance - I hated them for years, as you can get them to appear mighty sharp, pass every test in the book... but shave like $#^^#. I've got it down to a science now on what I do to TI's - so now I don't have a problem, but for your first TI i'd recommend having someone hone it who is used to honing TI's, as if done right - they are one of the smoothest shavers out there and it'll really give you a goal to strive for (honing wise) for the next TI you pick-up, so I'd recommend sending it to Lynn (or if you'd like I can hone it up for you gratis).

If you're like me though (and I think you are)... you'll just get it - and keep working at it for however long it takes, until you're happy with it.

For what it's worth - the 7/8th is a superlative shaver as well, however I prefer the looks of the 6/8 as the scales are the same size/shape - and with the 7/8 blade look a little small to my eye, where as the 6/8 is "sexier." Hell... you could get the Leaf and Vine TI, then send it out to get custom scales and give ole Randy a heart attack!

Just out of curiosty, if one was to go down this track and send it out to be rescaled, where would one send it to?

Depends on what kind of scales you are looking at getting - but Robert Williams would be the guy i'd recommend. The leaf and vine on giraffe bone, hippo ivory, or stag horn would be mighty, mighty sexy.

Thanks Joel,

You have made me very aware of TIs now. I was looking at the leaf and vine a short time ago, but then got put off with all the discussions about TI quality issues.

I then started looking at the Wackers and was so close to ordering it, it was not funny, until your timely review on them.

So now its back to that lovely leaf & vine again, and yes I reckon it would look very nice with a different set of scales on it, some sort of horn or something.

There is a really cool video out there that shows them making the TI razors. Try there website, if not I will look and see if I can find it again.

It is the beautiful razors like this one that really whet my desire to become proficient with a straight.
