Disappointed by my Alt-Innsbruck purchase

Hi everyone,

I had been waiting anxiously to get my Alt-Innsbruck aftershave/EDC after reading all the positive reviews. I was quite disappointed, though, to find out that it is not the all-natural product that every website claims it is. Every place that carries it says it has only four ingredients: water, alcohol, menthol, natural tobacco. However, there is a list on the back that has synthetic fragrance very high on the ingredient list along with a half-dozen other ingredients.

I'm really surprised by the erroneous information on every website that carries this product. Anyone else come across this problem?

Can you post a photo of the list? Sounds like a new label.

That's interesting. Wonder if the old label put all the ingredients on the label? Perhaps it just listed the main ones? New laws require more to be divulged to the consumer.

Is alcohol considered a natural ingredient?

I'm wondering if they've changed the formula or finally come clean about the ingredients. In either case, I'm disappointed as I am sensitive to artificial fragrance. It does smell pretty good.

Mine which seems to be exactly as depicted from Westcostshaving has two labels. The front states: "Alcohol, Nicotiana Tabacum, Mentol".

But the back has an ingredient list of the following:
"Alcohol denat, Aqua, Isopropyl Alcohol, Menthol, Parfum, Alpha Isomethyl, Ionone, Benzyl Benzoate, Cinnamyl Alcohol, Citral, Citronellol, Coumarin, Eugenol, Geraniol, Isoeugenol, Limonene, Linalool"

Interesting. My bottle -

At the bottom of front label:
Inhaltsstoffe (INCI):
Alcohol, Aqua, Nicotiana Tabacum, Menthol

At the top of the back label:
Alcohol denat., Aqua, Isopropyl Alcohol, Menthol, Parfum, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Benzyl Benzoate, Cinnamyl Alcohol, Citral, Citronellol, Coumarin, Eugenol, Geraniol, Isoeugenol, Limonene, Linalool.

The bottle shown at WCS doesn't have any ingredients on the front. However, we have the same bottle.

I think its just a case of the new more stringent labeling laws, most of what is listed is alchohol, water and fragrance.

I agree. I bet the front label is good enough in Austria and the itemized breakdown on the back is required in the US.

Oddly enough, it used to be quite difficult to track down a bottle of Alt Innsbruck, but now a number of vendors have it in stock. Perhaps the new label has made it easier to import?

Just checked mine, and I only show the 4 ingredients on the front. Ive had this bottle for a good 2 years give or take.

It is unfortunate that the vendors advertise it as having only four ingredients and no synthetic fragrance and then send you the bottle with a label that contradicts their ad.

Scott,
all organic compounds have chemical names. I think that this is the case here. just breaking it down to base components.

I am pretty sure Menthol is synthesized tho.

Thanks, Jim. My main concern is that it is advertised as having no synthetic fragrance (only the natural tobacco , yet the label lists 'parfum', which I believe is synthetic fragrance. Anyway, it's not a huge deal. It's just a bit pricey to find that it doesn't have the ingredients listed on various websites.

One somewhat tricky aspect of the natural vs. artificial discussion is that both types of ingredients may come from an industrial laboratory, and the only differ in their source material. This is a discussion that comes up often when discussing natural and artificial flavourings used in foods.

I agree but I cannot say that this is the case here.

Quite right.

It's artificially natural. Haha!!

I honestly don't care. The stuff smells great.

I guess it's like spam. It's disgusting to know what it is, but the stuff tastes darn great!!!
