Dirtybird 1.5 with attached lather bowl or not?

What is the recommendation for the Dirtybird 1.5? Is it better to have the lather bowl separate so you can dry out the outer bowl properly or does it rattle too much?

I am thinking if they stay together, then bleach can be put in the outer area to kill any possible mold once in a while. If the sections are separate, it makes it easier to fill with water in a smaller sink, but I am not sure about the rattling.

How do most of you guys (and gals) order your scuttles? Attached or removable lather bowl?

I ordered the DB Brush Scuttle with matching Lather Bowl last year ... I found the separate pieces hard to handle, and took up too much time with the filing and refilling. The inner bowl was HOT when I went to put it in place, and so was the outer bowl when I wanted to pick it up and move it. I really wish that design had a handle. (I'm sure Julie would put one on by special request.) I also found that the inner bowl was a little too small for the B&B Essential brush I was using at the time. I wound up selling the scuttle after a few months.

If I get another scuttle, I'd definitely go for the 1-piece design next time around. I think it will be more ergonomic and efficient to use.

I think the 1.5 scuttle is a good choice, with the major caveat that it will eat up a lot of real-estate on your counter top. I think it will be too big to store in a medicine cabinet, and I wouldn't want to keep pulling it out from under the sink or from a drawer every time I wanted to use it. Besides, it IS pretty to look at, so why not keep it out on display? Assuming, of course, that you can spare the space.

Your idea of bleaching the outer chamber is a good one, but I don't think you'll need to do it all that often. Even if there is a little bit of water left in the chamber after each use, it probably won't hurt anything to just leave it there. It will get rinsed clean each time that you refill it with hot water. Even if you only use the scuttle once a week, it should be OK.

I got mine as one piece. I inquired of Julie at Dirty Bird about getting the 2X in a two piece and she warned me that the 2 piece design will rattle, it doesn't retain heat as well and you can't fill the resorvoir as full because it will cause the lather bowl to float. I assume that would be the same for the 1.5X.

I have the 2X Dirty Bird two piece design, and it does rattle a little bit, but not overwhelmingly so. It retains heat very well, and filling the reservoir does not make the lather bowl float - the bowl is just too heavy for that. My concern when choosing the two piece design was build up in the inner chamber of a one piece design. Not only did the two piece design solve that problem, but I found another great use for this design as well - I can remove the lather bowl and use it by itself during the warmer months of the year.

I say start with the two piece design and try it out. If one finds they would like the one piece design better, just use a polyurethane adhesive and glue the two together. Problem solved.

I have the 1.5 one piece. I haven't tried the two piece, but can't see it being an improvement over the one piece.

Mold has not been an issue so far, and I live in a coastal town with plenty of mold. It's probably because I give it a good rinsing every day with my shave.

I love the 1.5, too. I wasn't fully convinced of the necessity of a scuttle, but the 1.5 has turned into one of those "luxuries" I can't live without.

I have and use the 1.5 every shave. Its one piece, works fine, no problems what so ever with it, and it doesn't take up much space, so its always out. :thumbup1:

I just received My 1.5 and it is a one piece. I also inquired about (1 vs. 2 design) as well and am glad I was steered to the one piece design, it functions very well in the two times I have used it. It is very stout and a little bigger than I expected. Great product and service as well.

How big is the DB 1.5 scuttle in regards to filling it in a regular bathroom sink? I wonder if it is easy to accidentally hit it on the faucet. It makes me think that maybe I should consider the original size, but I don't like my brush handle banging into the sides.

Well, it is big but I've never had a problem filling it and I have a relatively small sink.

Julie encouraged me to go with a one-piece 1.5X when I inquired, for all of the reasons mentioned above (heat retention, floating bowl syndrome, etc). I'm glad I went with the one-piece because it's very easy to use and works like a charm. It is rather big overall, but the bowl is just right. I have a two-tier storage unit under my sink and this sits on the top shelf - it's not that big of a hassle for me to pull it out when needed, but I only shave every other day (sometimes three days).

I keep mine on a silicon trivet when in use. It insulates it from the cold countertop, and protects the countertop from scratches.
