Difference between open and closed comb?

Hey I'm new to this whole wet shaving world and was wondering the difference between an open and a closed comb razor? Any help would be awesome.

Open comb is usually best for heavier beards, a few day's worth of growth, or those that like a more aggressive shaver. OCs also tend to leave more lather after a pass due to the design, so they can more aggressive in blade angle, but better at allowing the lather to supply cushion and protection. There's a lot of variety in open comb design though, so of course YMMV and all that, but that's it in a nutshell.

Honestly, I would try both open and closed combs to see which you like better. Not all open combs are aggressive. I find that some open combs are aggressive and others are quite mild (most Merkurs fall under the mild category). Check out the link I have in my signature for the "Open Comb Alliance." Feel free to ask questions there as we are all open comb users and lovers.

It's a matter of preference I think. I have a '34 TTO Aristocrat open comb, the gillette NEW long and short tooth models, and both Old and New Type vintage all open combs. I think the NEW model gives the mildest type of shave and the old types are less so. The aristocrat just gives a good shave and I like the style. You just have to try one and see what you think, if it were me I would suggest you pick a NEW type and give it a go. good luck bc

+1 on the NEW. I like my Single Ring better, but I think the NEW is one of the better starter open combs; which is why I am giving one away to new members on the PIF page! Jabel, get your name in the thread if you want a chance to win one!

I think the differences are well explained. If your angle is off, you will see teeth marks in the lather.

Also, yes, you will need to try it. You can probably get a cheap shaver grade NEW on BST and it will give you a fair idea!
