Did I make a mistake? Is this the real Yardley?

For the last six months, I have been bidding on every Yardley shave soap on ebay, hoping to score a puck of the soap I have read so much about. Today, I finally scored. But since nobody bid against me, I am wondering if I am the luckiest guy on ebay, or if I made a mistake. Is this the vintage Yardley I have heard so much about?

Was it just the box you wanted? I see guys collect 'vintage' soaps and aftershaves, but after a few years soaps go off, or harden don't they? Do guys actually use them? There is a cafe in the city near where I live and they have unopened Old Spice colognes, Old Spice Soaps from the 1970s and tones of every other male grooming products from years gone by all locked in glass cabinets. The place is designed over an old chemist / pharmacy (drugstore for U.S. patrons) and a waiter told me that stuff goes off after 2 or 3 years so unless you collect bottles what else can you do with them?

You have been told wrong.

Vintage Yardley is a highly prized soap, said by most to out perform any soap available today. Vintage Old Spice is also a very good soap. As is Vintage Williams. Most vintage soap has long lost any scent it had, but performance is otherwise top notch.

There are several of us on the board that regularly use vintage aftershave from the 1970's. It's over 40 years old, and still smells great. Sure it can turn, if exposed to adverse storage conditions (constant exposure to sun, and heat), but it's turning is not a product of it's age.

That Yardley is the real deal alright, and looks as if it's only got a couple of shave off of it. Nice find, enjoy it!

And Alejandro, you were indeed misinformed. I've got some Old Spice soap from the 40's and, while it has lost any scent it may have had, it performs very well.

Great price on that Yardley. Most of the time it goes for around $50, if new and unused.
For me, it's in my top five soaps all time.

You got a great deal. I hope it has some of the original scent (or all of the original scent), because you're going to find out what a great lathering soap this one is! Good score!

I agree with John and Francis, you/he/they couldn't be more wrong. I have Williams soap that is well over 50 years old that is great, along with a lot of Old Spice cologne, aftershave and soap that dates as far back as the 50's that is wonderful stuff. Not to mention the gallons of vintage Avon I've acquired.

I also use vintage Surrey, Colgate, Rawleigh and Barbershop soap. Maybe one day a week I'll use something "modern" but the rest of the time it's some type of vintage soap.

That is a great price for the best soap there is!! Wish I could find a few for so little $$. Normally, they go for at least double this. Good find my friend!!

that's a nice find at a nice price. I believe that is one of the later versions of Yardley; labels on earlier bowls are in greens & blacks, with coats-of-arms, different London addresses, etc. (There are threads on B&B discussing some of these.)

If you ever have the chance to go for a vintage Yardley shaving stick in glass - go for it! (I believe these are labeled English Lavender.) The glass jar preserves the lavender scent & they really are amazing. From the early '60's, I believe. They have sold for up to $50. (I know since I'm the sumgai who drove the prices up!)

I have a number of vintage Yardley after shaves as well - from the 1940's & 1950's up to the 1970's. The early ones are among my favorite lavenders.

I love the old stuff! (Probably because I are one.)

Enjoy!

The really good news is that I saved enough that I can afford a new Rudy Vey butterscotch brush!
