What's new

diary of a new DE shaver

Hi, I am new to the world of DE shaving.
in the past I use a mach3.

I decided to keep a bit of a diary of my experience of switching to DE shaving.

about 18 months ago I got a cheep Weishi DE.
only used it a few times, didn't get a good result.
went back to my mach3.

then two weeks ago I decided to have another go at DE shaving.
I got a Parker 17R

day 1.
just did my normal thing as I would have done with my mach3.
normal shave cream
all done in less than 10 minutes.
didn't cut myself, but results less than I would like.
left my skin a bit red, not a very close shave.
thought about going back to my mach3.

spent two hours reading the basics on this site.

day 2.
used hot towel in my prep, just basic shave cream.
spent about 25 minutes with the shaving, keeping angel and pressure in mind.
cold towel to finish.
quite happy with results.
slight irritation of skin.
not as good as I can get with mach3 but still quite good.

day 3.
longer with the hot towel in prep, still just basic shave cream.
spend about 25 minutes with shaving, using less pressure.
changed my grip on handle, three finger tips on end of handle.
cold towel to finish.
very happy with results.
very little irritation of skin.

day 4.
only needed to spend 15 minutes to get good results.
results about as good as I get with my mach3 on a bad day.
no irritation of skin.

day 5.
much the same as day 4.
getting faster, total time of about 10 minutes, getting good results, still not quite as close as I would like.

day 6.
weekend means more time to spend getting things as good as I can.
hot towel prep, still just basic shave cream.
longer and slower, very decisive strokes.
find that washing out the blade after each stroke helps.
first pass WTG and then an ATG pass.
then re-lather, one more pass on the spots that need.
hot water rinse with towel, then a cold towel to finish.
total time of 25 minutes.

very happy with the results, about as close as I have ever got with the mach3.
