Detaille Aeroplane & Escrimeur EDTs

Hi group,

Been away for a while now, but now that autumn has settled in, I am back!!

I've seen the Detaille fragrances online at Manufactum, so I've never smelt them. I was just wodnering if anyone on the forum has heard of them or even if they use them. Where is the best place to try the scents out?

Thanks in advance for any responses!

Hi rum,

I do use Aéroplane, although it has lost its position as my "go to" to Eucris, it is a cologne I very much enjoy. To my nose, the "peppery citrus moss" combination makes it quite enjoyable, it is unobtrusive and wearable all year round.

As to trying them out, I have asked for samples at a local store, but the different scent sells them and usually sells samples as well.

Best,
Marc

Thanks for the response Marc - really appreciate you getting back.

Seems quite hard to find anywhere in the UK that does this fragrance. I can't even find a web site, are they a small perfumery or something?

rum,

my pleasure. Détaille is, as I understand it from their website, a perfumery founded at the beginning of the 20th century in Paris as "Institut Détaille". It is said to have deveolped into a meeting point of aristocrats, politicians and artists, and some celebrities of those days numbered among the clients.

You may try their homepage for more information, and they do have an order section. I just saw they also offer samples. I have never used their online order, but I would guess they ship to the UK.

BTW, thank you for your post, I wore Aérolane today, and enjoyed it...

Best,
Marc

Thanks so much for the link, Marc.
I don't think I would have found that site had it not been for your help - I'm in the middle of placing an order for samples. It makes more sense to pay €10-15 rather than €100 for a bottle of something you might not even like!!

What did you use the fragrance alongside? Would be interesting to hear what soaps/creams it works well with. In fact, better still, would you be able to write a review and post it?

rum,

glad to help, I hope you will find the samples to your liking (btw, I remember Miles as being a quite nice fragrance as well).

As to what Aéroplane works with, I usually use an unscented deodorant. Regarding (shaving) soaps, it works well with D.R.Harris Arlington, which has a similar scent, and Trumper's rose, which does not linger. Penhaligon's English Fern has a scent that remains on the skin for a bit, and to my nose does not mix too well with the cologne.

What I like about Aéroplane is that it feels classic and "well-mannered" through the classical citrus note, but the mossy/peppery base give it that "rugged" edge. I think it is quite aptly named, as it conjures the image of a pioneer of flight, having worked on the engine of his plane, now all dressed up and heading for a black-tie evening at the club.

Well my samples arrived in the post today.

Most of them I didn't like, others I've not even opened yet. Aeroplane is good though. In fact when I first put it to my nose I thought "uh oh....!" and now I think it's very much like Acqua di Parma. Nonetheless, I'll try it next time I am going out or shaving and will report back!

I used Aéroplane on Sunday morning along with my Palmolive shave stick (surprisingly a good shave with that!), Puma razor, Lotion Opaline and moisturiser.

It does smell very much like Eau Sauvage, as has been said but it also has hints of Acqua di Parma Colonia as I suspected. I could smell the cypress tree which was quite good and also elements of incense or something like that.

I wouldn't buy it though as it's too similar to the other fragrances mentioned so there wouldn't be much point in splashing out all that cash. Nonetheless, trying it out again in the spring or summer might change my mind.

The samples were a great way to try the scents. I wasn't impressed with the envelope that had a stamp value of €1.50 on it. I had paid €7.50 for postage on top of the €5.00 for the samples themselves.

I have both of these and like them both a lot.

Aeroplane has a traditional cologne style structure but has some strong green notes as well as jasmine that both create a wilder more raw edge than many colognes. The most similar other fragrances to Aeroplane are Goutal Eau de Sud and Creed Royal Water. Both have the strong lemon with bold jasmine influence. Neither of those is as green as Aeroplane. I like it, but it is out on the edge for a cologne style.

Escrimeur is also a traditional style cologne but it is a much smoother and more interesting from the incense notes as well as the fine white musk base. This one is really smooth. Highly recommended.

Wow, how on earth did this thread get dug up after so long?

I remember getting the samples of these scents through the door. Didn't think much of them at the time. Maybe time to revisit!

Hey rum;

This thread popped up on Google when I searched for reviews on Detaille Aeroplane, since I had recently gotten some. I responded to it. I did not even notice the date! That is old! I assumed it was recent since I just discovered these two fragrances.

It is usually faster to search for fragrance information on Google than searching through old threads.

I totally agree - Google is the search king even when looking at results from specific sites.

Glad you replied to this thread though - that way we keep information organised on this site. So in future other potential readers will find what they are looking for.
