What's new

Desert Fatboy

Our ranch has a dump site that was used from probably the 1930s to the early to mid 70s when a landfill opened close enough for my Grandpa to use it. Yesterday my aunt was out looking for old porcelain to use in an art project and she found this first quarter 1959 Fatboy. My Grandpa and briefly my Great Grandpa were the only shavers in the household during time range when it could have been deposited so the odds are 95% that it belonged to one of them. When I got it it was packed full of dirt and froze up. There was no blade but the doors were closed. I worked it under running hot water with liberal applications of soap until it freed up then I hit it with a toothbrush then mineral oil. When I got out of the shower today I put a Dorco Prime Platinum in it, looked to see how the blade was sitting, set it to 3, gritted my teeth and shaved. After a minimum of 49 years laying out in the Arizona desert exposed to all the beating sun, monsoon rain and winter chill nature could throw at it I got a really respectable shave. Unbelievable! I have no idea why it was discarded, maybe it was just displaced by something new. Perhaps it was thrown away after my Great Grandpa died in 1960. Whatever the reason it's back indoors, it's still on the ranch and it's the new centerpiece of my budding collection of razors. I would never have it re-plated, it's earned it's patina, but I might send it to Razor Emporium for their tune up service.
