Derby Deal

The infamous (as in, 'not famous') Orange Derbys. I keep waiting to hear people chime in on these, but as yet there's no clear consensus... much like the Derbys before them. Cheap is cheap, though, no doubt.

Well, I've got 250 units winging their way to my house so I'll let you know.
I've got no problem with regular label Derbys and I doubt these will be any different. The fact that there is no consensus regarding the orange labeled variety translates to me that there were no actual facts introduced into the discussion. Hard information tends quickly to develop a consensus among most rational thinking folk. Not to imply that rumors and speculation aren't fun...:tongue_sm

The Orange Derby are the newest production aimed specifically for the North American market. These are sold in packs of 10, and presently as far as I know you can only buy them from Amazon in a lot of 250 blades. These are part of the storefront of The Shaving Factory, which is the official Derby distributor in the US.

I purchased a lot of 250, kept 30 blades for myself, and redistributed the rest to the board hoping to spark discussion on them; unfortunately this doesn't seem to have happened.

In my testing, these perform quite a bit better than the Vertical Derby which I had to cork for them to be usable; if I didn't do this, they ripped my face up.

I have tested the Orange Derby in 2 Techs (regular, and the earlier slightly more aggressive version with the triangular holed baseplate), a Gillette Super Adjustable, and my Muhle R89. Results were really favorable in all but the Muhle, but that has been giving me less perfect results regardless of blade choice lately.

Got my delivery today from the amazonian dealer. 250 blades for under 20 bucks. Hope I like them:w00t::tongue_sm
The box was small and efficiently packed for transport. All was in order when I opened it up.
I'll break one out tomorrow and try it in a Muhle r41. Just had a feather in that
razor all week so I'm interested in the contrast.

As someone who meets with the Derby importer for the USA I can tell you first hand they are the very same as the green. Derby blades main office and importer is the Shaving Factory located in North Jersey, not too far from my job. When I need items for the site I buy them direct from Mehmet who runs it. The orange Derby is on a hanger card and the languge is in English as opposed to the foreign green and white packaging. This was done to be on the shelves of stores here in the USA as say American Safety Razor AKA Personna was and still is. There is nothing different about the blade. In fact there is a thread I posted early this year about them on the boards when they first came in. If I only knew I would have marketed them on my site but there was so much anti Derby, get the pitchforks and torches out talk back then:angry:.

There is nothing different about any Derby blade, vertical or horizontal print according to the main office but I am sure many will weigh in differently on this. The placebo effect in motion I declare:sneaky2:.

Anybody have a problem with their order from Amazon? I put in my order a couple days ago and it hasn't shipped yet.. but today I see that they put a warning up on the Amazon site that says

"Item Under Review

While this item is available from other marketplace sellers on this page, it is not currently offered by Amazon.com because customers have told us there may be something wrong with our inventory of the item, the way we are shipping it, or the way it's described here. (Thanks for the tip!)

We're working to fix the problem as quickly as possible."

Anybody aware of a problem with them?

Wow, very strange turn of events.
I also noticed that the stated price went up to $23.99 from the original $19.99.
The vendor in my purchase had a name like "Kanar", not Shaving factory.
I can also report that the blades were, in all respects, Derby blades and there was nothing suspicious about them or the transaction. In short I'm at a loss as to what is going on. Perhaps a competing vendor made some kind of complaint alleging counterfeiting or some such thing, in order to get him out of the way??
At 8 cents per blade he probably didn't make many friends among the other vendors. But obviously, this is mere speculation on my part.
In any case I'm just glad I got my order in when I did:001_cool:

Well, my order of orange Derbies arrived today. I think I was one of the last ones to get the $19.99 deal since, as Gophred pointed out, they are now selling for $23.99, and ship from the Shaving Factory instead of from Amazon directly. (I wonder if the Shaving Factory got annoyed at Amazon undercutting them on price on their own product?)

Other than the fact that they have an orange label and 10 blades per pack instead of 5, I can't visually see any difference between these and the normal green Derbies. I'll give one a try tomorrow and see how they perform.

derby greens where always hit and miss with me more miss than anything else. I just sold them. tore up my face.

I discovered through trial and error (also known as cuts and blood) that Derbys work in my Muhle r89, but not so well in my Muhle r41 open comb.
