What's new

Decants I have to try.

I plan on ordering a few decants from the perfumed court. I really want to try Creed Green Valley and Imperial and Terre de Hermes.

Also considering trying Mugler A Man, Kouros or M7.

Any other scents I have to try. I realize this is pretty open ended but any suggestions of must haves would be great. I like fresh not heavy scents like Mugler cologne, Aqua de Gio, Azzaro Chrome, Acqua di Parma, Green Irish Tweed etc. But open to try eclectic scent like A Man etc.

That's an interesting selection you put forth...I can usually tell someone's age range based on frag choices and yours baffles me which is sort of interesting.
You say fresh not heavy, but then reference A*Men which is one of the most potent scents I know. Last time I wore it, HR almost sent me home to shower.

I tend to like heavier juice, some of the fresh stuff is short on legs for my tastes, but here's a couple I'll throw out at you:

L'Instant de Guerlain Pour Homme
Incredibly sophiscated. A very light gourmand. Slightly on the sweet side but not overpowering like A*Men. ++ with women, especially if they
get close. It doesn't project like some of the gourmands. It took me a few wearings to "get it" with this one and I'm glad I stuck with it.
Biggest problem with this one is pronouncing it if someone asks what you're wearing (if your French from HS is rusty). Second biggest problem
is watching their eyes glaze over when you do tell them.

Rochas Man
A gourmand not unlike A*Men, but a bit lighter and easier to wear. Smells way too foody for some in here I'm sure, but it's a nice gourmand
that is no where near as polarizing as A*Men.

YSL Rive Gauche Pour Homme
Legendary with wet shavers. A "barbershop" scent that's good for young or mature. Unless you're very young (<25) this is a good versatile scent.
I don't tend to think of it as "heavy" but I wouldn't call it "light" either.

Creed Millesime Imperiale
A modern classic. I think it is Creed's first entree into the lighter, fresher frags that started in the 90s. But it's the Creed version of "lighter."

Versace L'Homme
Another scent I can't shut up about. An 80s "power" frag that is still fantastic. A little tough to find, but can be had reasonably. Versace
suffers a lot from a rep for light weight, modern stuff. This juice is the first frag from them and it is potent, vintage 80s shyt.
It's "L'Homme" - not "Man" "Pour Homme" or anything else. Again, not heavy to me, but YMMV. It just plain smells good. This is my vote for your eclectic scent.
No one in your town has every heard of it or wears it. You won't smell like everybody else, that's for sure.
And a guess is like most wet shavers, you won't want to tell anyone you're wearing anything by "Versace."

Gendarme 20
A great summer scent. Opens with potent blast of lavender and has more legs than most of the Gendarme line. Inordinately fresh/clean scent.
All of the Gendarmes are highly inoffensive (which is probably why they seem to be favored by politicians.)

L'Eau d'Issey
Along with Aqua di Gio, the fragrance most repsonsible for fueling the modern trend of light, aquatic scents for men. I wear it on occasion, but like AdG, so does everybody else.
If you like scents like AdG, this is a good one. As a fume head, I tend to shy away from the overly popular stuff, but I won't attack anyone who likes it. These best selling frags are best sellers because they are fundamentally good scents. Plus women tend to really, really like them. As I sit here right now in the divine reek of Creed Vintage Tabarome, it is forever perplexing that a GF of mine loves Issey and whistles the Old Spice theme when I wear Tabarome.

Thanks! a very helpful post. Sounds like you really know your stuff. Definitely have to try some of these you mentioned. They all sound excellent.
As far as trying A Man. I don't know if it will be my cup of tea(i doubt it will be)...but I heard there is nothing like it so I kind of want to give it a try.

Decants can seem expensive, but they sure save money over jumping on full bottles! You might check into The Crystal Flacon. Its more informal then TPC but a good source. I'd recommend Muddasir!

If you're intrigued by A*Men, you should definitely sample it. It's one the frags that is either really loved or really hated. Doesn't seem to a lot of middle ground. It is very unique and distinctive.
The original scent that inspired it was Angel for women, which is one of the few scents that turns me into a 12-year-old boy when I smell it on a woman. There is something to be said for "gourmand" scents.

That designer, Thierry Mugler, has a big following of younger guys who love everything he does. He recently put out a line of limited edition A*Men "flankers" (scents related to the original scent but slightly different). Pure Malt and Pure Coffee were snapped up by his fans.

Absolutely, try A Men. Unique. Not my fav, but I understand TM's following for sure and you may love it.

Pretty much a +1 on every thing StylinLA said by reputation. Amazing by I have tried none of the scents he lists, unless the Issey is the standard Issey, in which cased I can vouch personally for that one.

Yup- standard Issey

You can't go wrong with a couple of Penhaligons. Blenheim Bouquet, Lords/Douro, Opus 1970 are lighter but very nice scents.

The first two of those three are on my top five list of all time, and I really like Opus. At least BB, though, seems to be rather controversial. Some love it, like me, and some really dislike it. I think I have heard far fewer negative comments about Douro and even fewer about Opus!

I think Your three listed are great, GV, MI, and TDH. I really like them. Since You like the fresh scents, I would add Creed Silver Mountain Water and Origional Vetiver. I really prefer OV over Mugler, as the dry down on Mugler is rank on My skin. Dior Eau Sauvage is also worthy in the discussion.

I really like Opus. And if I ever pull the trigger on a Pens scent it will be a tough decision between English Fern and Opus. IMO though Opus is a winter/fall scent(a great one i might add).

Kouros is a great one to try, the original that is. Don't know about Body Kouros or any of the other versions. But beware: there is something very un-American about Kouros. Pop your collar and learn Italian if you wear it.

I love the Mugler Cologne and would also recommend Rive Gauche. You also may like the Cologne catagory, check out Eau d'Hermes (currently in the BST) along with Eau Sauvage by Dior.

It's funny, ever since I started frequenting the cologne forum here, I've had this thing about not wearing something I think a lot of other guys might be wearing. Meanwhile, I almost never notice what other guys are wearing anyhow. :out:
