DE Travel - Will Blades Fly?

Today was my first carry on with DE on an airline. I packed my slant and one Astra blade (in the Astra cardboard box). They tore apart my luggage and the TSA screener took my slant from my kit and looked to see if there was a blade in it. There wasn't so they said I was good to go. They missed the blade altogether. I mentioned that I checked the TSA web site and DE blades are allowed and she was totally unaware. Feeling lucky that I got through with my blade so I can be BBS for my business meetings.

The TSA restrictions are a little confusing on this, but the short is that they allow what they call "safety razors" (by which they actually mean cartridge razors) but don't allow DE blades. You can always check your DE blades, though.

If you go through the archives this topic comes up quite a bit.

They don't say DE blades are allowed. The TSA makes a distinction between DE razors and modern cartridge razors, only considering the cartridge variety to actually be "safety razors." It's confusing, incorrect, and pisses a lot of us off, but this comes up all the time here and I can say from personal experience they probably will take your DE blades if they see them.

Generally, for me this isn't worth the hassle of waiting for some TSA goon to paw through my luggage. I just bring my old M3 on most trips. It's a comparatively crappy shave, but when speed and convenience are paramount, it still gets the job done.

+1

I just bring a Sensor with me when I fly. I get quick and comfy shaves with no worries about hassles and delays from TSA.

So long as the blades do not go in carry on, you can bring DEs with you. If you bring a de razor in carry on, that's fine provided there is no blade in it.

The wiki article explains it all.

+1 I just flew to and from NYC and I did that very thing. That is, I made sure that my DE Blades were in my luggage. Never had any problems.

I have an upcoming trip to Milwaukee and that's my plan exactly. I'm not checking any luggage so I guess I'll break out the Sensor again.

I understand the concern for safety, and why handguns and knives are banned, but I think banning DE razor blades is taking it a touch too far. Besides, I don't know about all of you, but I predict that the next time someone attempts to hijack an airplane, there's going to be a rush to jump him and beat him to a pulp.

Offer a service, for a small fee, to secure your sharps and what have you in a tagged envelope and place it in a secure location on board the aircraft.
When the aircraft lands, passengers are offloaded and you go to a claim station for your envelope full of razor blade and nail file goodness, and off you go.

If you gave passengers the chance to cough up $1.50 to bring their favorite pocket knife, DE blades, or that little item that slipped their mind with them instead of tossing it, I'm sure plenty would take the offer.
