Lots of good advice here. I only add that a light touch is very important. Using just enough pressure to remove the lather. With a good razor and blade, the whiskers will come off with it

There are some shave butters and creams out there that require no brush. Just rub a bit on you face with your hand. Since there is no big lather you can see what you are doing, I think. I don't know how good these things are, to be honest. I'd just dive in and buy a decent soap and a Yaqi brush and have fun falling down the rabbit hole.
