What are the gaps for the Mergress/Opgress/Progress?

I've not measured anything. These numbers appeared on the internet so they must be correct, but are they useful?

9-23 Meme Material..png

The blade gap is, in my opinion, a poor measure of how a razor performs. That's a much more complex calculus beyond my comprehension. It's like pornography in that I know it when I see it.

Anyway...

Happy shaves,

I shaved a fortune

It's been a long time since I tried the ATT Bronze 38. As I recall it's much different from the fully closed Mergress/Opgress.

No, I'm not saying the gap means nothing.

Happy shaves,

Jim
I’ve been thinking about shaving with my Timeless Bronze 0.38. I’m going to use my ATT S1 later this evening but as soon as Slantember is in the books, the Timeless Bronze 0.38 it is.

Monday. An interesting shave.

Today's razor was the Fine Slant. I had an ~48 hour growth to remove. The razor showed its relative inefficiency but still got the job done with enough work.

I believe it is not the razor to use at a steep angle.

It's an okay razor but certainly nothing special. I have others which are as mild, and more smooth feeling, and also are more efficient. The X3 comes to mind as does the Superslant L1+.

Willy's (5), flipped.

Shea butter. Cube/Tube.

It is a very pretty razor in my view of it.

However, I do not think much of it.

Looking back at yesterday's shave it wasn't so good.

Later in the day yesterday I notice some stubble around my mouth. This never happens, and yet it did. My technique was not worse yesterday. The Fine Slant razor is even less effective than I thought.

Maybe it's better used shallow throughout the shave, but that's not how I use DE razors.

Tuesday. Rex Konsul. Interesting.

9-19-23.Konsul.GD.Lavender.ZenCopMan.640.JPG

This morning I shaved after my pool workout, but I had ample time to get a good shave. I used settings of #2, then #4, then #1 (which is not quite fully closed). Even so, I can't say this was the best shave I've had recently. Mostly, I don't think this morning's shave was a close as usual even though I used setting #4. Besides that, the razor is simply not, on my skin, as smooth feeling as I'd like. It's not really rough, but it is far from the standard in my den.

Willy's (6), flipped.

Shea butter last night. Cube/Tube.

The lovely Zenith Manchurian is one of my very favorite brushes. It is almost as soft as a Mozingo. It has great scrub. Lovely feeling and lovely acting, it is.

The star of the show today was my new soap. This Grooming Dept soap has a very pleasant lavender scent. I see no downsides to the base or the scent. It seems to be a rather soft soap (as are the GD soaps I've previously used, years ago) but so what? I like it.

Do I like it better than Mike's Hungarian Lavender? Not that I noticed today. However, one shave doesn't tell the tale.

Today's lavender was sent to me as a gift by a member who decided he doesn't much like the scent of lavender. He sent me another lavender soap which I'll try tomorrow, and its accompanying splash . What a nice gift, don't you think!

I don't keep up with the various bases the various soap artisans produce these days. Mostly that's because I'm so satisfied with Mike's soap base which apparently never changes because he long ago perfected it to his satisfaction (and mine).

Anyway, this soap's Grooming Dept base, the lavender is in Mo's newest 2023 KirosSE base which is said to be the fancy one, the one that's hard to obtain. It wasn't hard for me to obtain; all I had to do was open the surprise package I found in the mail! Lucky me!

1695142434691.png

One shave with a soap is enough for me to know I like it, but not enough for me to say it compares favorably or unfavorably with another soap. At least not for sure. My initial impression of this base is highly favorable, but it also seems much like Mike's soaps in how it loads, lathers, and performs, including in the post shave.

(Remember I always use the Cube/Tube which probably changes everything.)

I'll continue on with my great stash of lavender soaps. Why not?

Happy shaves,

Jim

The Fine Aluminum Slant is my favorite slant :001_wub: (obviously our mileage varies).

I like my RazoRock Superslant L3 SB and my PBOCS very much, but the Fine Aluminum Slant towers over them (for me).

Steep for me, all the time... and BBS no problem! :cornut:

Cal, thanks for that, but it amazes me.

I no longer have my PBOCS. I don't regret giving it away, but wish I'd had two when I did. It was, as I recall, a very good razor for me.

For me the Fine Aluminum Slant is not enough and the SS L3 is too much.

Don't get me wrong, I like the L3, but I like the SS L1+ a lot better.

I have no idea, Cal, what exactly any of this means beyond the cliche, YMMV, and my apologies for using it.

It's Wednesday morning. I used a razor I've not used in a long time. I was pleasantly surprised with how smooth feeling and close shaving the ATT S1 Slant was this morning.

I'm having some internet problems and apparently can't upload my photograph. Maybe later. Ah, yes, now it works through my phone's hotspot.

9-20-23.ATT.S1.Ethos.30mmSV.640.JPG

Today's blade was a brand new Willy's.

The brush is one of my larger Saponificio Varesino beauties. Obviously (assuming you know the brush or can see a photograph) the knot is different from the fan, almost flat top, Mozingo knots. However, I'd be hard pressed to say I like the Mozingo knots a lot more than I like the SV knots. All my brushes with Mozingo knots and with SV knots are plenty soft, have delicious scrub, and are perfect. It would be impossible to say the Zenith brush I used yesterday is not in the same league; the only caveat is the Zenith took forever, over a hundred shaves, to break in to the point where it became truly super soft, whereas the others didn't require breaking in.

It's also possible my SV knots and Mozingo knots will change over time, but I don't see how they could improve.

My soap this morning was Ethos Lavender. Like yesterday's GD Lavender, this tub was a gift from a member. I've used Frank's soaps before, but don't know that I can accurately directly compare those soaps with this one. Frank's Ethos is a good soap base for sure. Its lavender scent seems to me much like the scents of the other two lavenders I've used recently. I'm not saying they are exactly the same scent, but I have no idea how to describe the difference, differences I see as insignificant. Perhaps with more experience I'll change my mind.

It is really a treat to try these three lavender scented soaps together and compare them. I very much appreciate the gifts and the opportunity.

We are all so fortunate with soaps these days. There are a few bad soaps out there, but finding a good soap is pretty easy as long as the scent isn't a bother. I'd say that Mike's and Ethos and Grooming Dept are far better than just good.

My shave was good. It was significantly easier, smoother, and closer than yesterday's shave with the Konsul. I don't think the difference was a new blade, but that's a possibility I suppose.

Happy shaves to you,

Jim

Thursday's shave was quick but good.

9-21-23.ATT-S1.Mike's.Ivory-Mozingo.640.JPG

I was pressed for time so I did only one lathering. Just shaved N-S, but got a very decent shave. This is a quite effective and plenty efficient razor. Also it is smooth feeling and comfortable.

I like the ATT S1 Slant!

This may be my strongest smelling lavender soap (of the three I have and have used in the last few days), but I will continue to experiment with the three soaps.

Shea butter. Cube/Tube.

Is this my favorite Mozingo knot? The handle is great by the way, but a 24 mm Mozingo knot is huge. Not as huge as my larger Mozingo knots, but huge anyway. It's much larger than any other 24 mm knot I'm familiar with.

Happy shaves to you,

Jim

Good thing I like my one horse.

Shea butter last night? I'm not sure. I am sure about the Cube/Tube being used this morning.

My shave was what I think of as my usual shave meaning it was what I usually do unless I have endless time and am ambitious or unless I'm very pressed for time (like yesterday). It was a good, close, comfortable shave.

The lowly FOCS is a very good shaving razor. Daily Driver.

Saturday's shave was good.

9-23-23.iKonB1Slant.Ethos.CH3BB.640.JPG

Willy's (4), flipped.

I enjoyed using the iKon B1 Standard Slant. Whether this razor is a Daily Driver or even a Daily Driver Candidate has yet to be determined. I don't think it will be a Daily Driver as it might not be quite comfortable enough (for me) to meet that very high bar. Still, it is a razor I like because it shaves quite closely and because it is reasonably smooth and comfortable.

The jury is still out on it, but I saw one of the jurors winking at the judge.

9-23..CH2.CH3.BestBadger.2Brushes.640.JPG

In the photo, the CH3 knot is damp.

I'd not used either of my two Best Badger Chubby brushes in a while. I know they're not all that similar in their knots, but I don't remember either terribly well. This one, the CH3, is a good performer, but it is pretty floppy. It lacks density. It also has just a hint of scritch. However, it loads and lathers well, and it has perhaps just enough scrub to get the job done.

It is a huge knot for sure.

In no way is it a top tier brush compared to others on my shelves, but it's still a good brush.

9-23.ChubbyCollection.4Brushes.Simpson.640.JPG

I like all of my Simpson brushes all of which are within the Chubby line, but are they, in my collection, top tier? I don't think so. Still, I'd probably be happy were any one of them my only brush.

Shea butter last night. Cube/Tube today.

This was a good and enjoyable shave. I will continue to assess the comfort of my skin following it.

I've spent too much time looking at the new Blackland Osprey adjustable.

From what I've read and read between the lines the razor is designed for guys who use only one of an adjustable's settings throughout each entire shave. This is not me as I tend to use three settings in one shave when I use an adjustable. I've put in a question to the vendor about my understanding or misunderstanding of the target audience.

The handle is too long, but that's probably not a deal breaker.

The handle diameter is not published (why?). I've put in a question about handle diameter, too. I'm not buying a too skinny handle every again.

The razor, or at least the handle, is beautiful. Anyone at all interested in razors, their machining, and the intersection of aesthetics and function should look closely at the Osprey on the vendor's website, closely enough to see the how the deliberate machining marks contribute to beauty and also to function.

The jury is still out but my guess is this ⇢

I'm not part of the razor's target audience or so I think until I know more.

Mid shave adjustment could be dangerous.

The handle is too long, and maybe too skinny.

It is expensive in stainless steel, and then there's the obvious question of how much better might it be in titanium. Certainly it will be soon made in titanium, and what will that cost? My guess $500.

It sure is pretty. I'm not saying no, but I'm also not pulling the trigger just yet. (Yes, I know I could buy one and return it if it doesn't suit me.)

The few shave reviews I've seen are encouraging, particularly the one where the reviewer says he has sensitive skin.

The mechanism certainly looks interesting. One of my old boss' used to say anybody can make a widget with a thousand parts to do a good job. The guy that can make that same widget with only a few parts is the guy with the smarts.

”The lowly FOCS.” Lol. Love it. No bragging rights, much maligned, not pretencious, too inexpensive to be any good……

”Is a very good shaving razor.” Especially if you’re in a hurry, can’t see, don’t pay attention, have a 4 day beard, don’t want to cut yourself, and want a close comfortable shave.

”Daily Driver.” Yep, twice a week, Sunday and Thursday.

Only razor I use, I put all my other razors in my holster drawer with all the holsters I don’t use.

This is the razor to love when you hate to shave.

I do.

9-26-23.Filament.Ethos.Polo.640.JPG

I think I've only used the Filament once before. That was almost a year ago. It is a very excellent razor for me. Easy to use. Safe. Comfortable. Highly effective and plenty efficient. It is at least a Daily Driver Contender (in my razor hierarchy that's very good indeed) and probably a Daily Driver (the highest category).

Willy's (6), flipped. Shea butter last night. Cube/Tube today.

Yes, this is a huge brush with a huge knot. Polo 12 by Rudy Vey with an extra dense 28 or 29 mm Mozingo knot. Not too dense. Really nice brush. Really great knot.
