D4 Fatboy - subtle difference from E, F and G years?

Check this out - I haven't seen this before. I just received a crusty D4 Fatboy, and something looked odd with the adjuster collar. It has an exposure of handle between the adjuster collar and the black paint band. Nothing seemed mis-aligned or loose or out of place.



I lined it up against an E and G date code just to make sure I wasn't wrong



Sure enough, the D4 Fatboy looks different. Out came the ruler. Turns out the D4 has a center knurled section (between the painted and unpainted bands) measures 1" and 2.5 16ths on the E and G Fatboys but measures 1" and 1.5 16ths on the D 4. I also measured two other E and G Fatboys with similar (1" and 2.5 16ths) results.

Is this a consistent difference between D year Fatboys or is this an exception? Do all D Fatboys have a shorter center knurled section?
