D.R. HARRIS MARLBOROUGH Aftershave?

Just recieved my first bottle of D.R. Marlborough aftershave. The bottle that I recieved smells like a ash tray, and left my face a ash white. Did I recieve a bad bottle. I wanted to like this aftershave but I am very disappointed. How is the Arlington. Thanks an GOD BLESS.

Sorry to share, but Marlborough does smell like ashtray. The Arlington is a citrusy scent which is much more pleasant to the noise.

Ashtray? I get a really strong blast of Cedar with a bit of Sandalwood in the background. Masculine and woody, not ashtray. Maybe the name invokes the ashtray comparison? Marlborough is one of my favorite scents - love it.

Arlington is more citrus and fern - 180 degrees different than Marlborough.

I've never gotten ashtray off of Malborough. It smells like wood to me, especially like the inside of an empty wine barrel. I doubt that you got a bad bottle but this may not be a good aftershave for you.

i just checked my stash and my bottle of marlborough is 1/2 empty. one of my faves and will use it later. thanks for reminding me i had it

+1

Yeah, I definitely don't detect a ashtray smell at all... It's one that's at the top of my list. That reminds me, I actually just ran out. need to reorder.

+1 To me it smells like smokey woods. It's cedar and sandalwood mostly. It should not turn your face WHITE though. Is your skin used to aftershaves with alcohol in it? I just wonder if your face is drying out because of the alcohol.

To me it smells smokey and woody. I don't get ash tray it's more of a smoke scent like you get when you smoke food.

I just got a bottle of Windsor (almost bought the Marlborough) and noticed the same white on my face, thought it was just due to the fact that we are in a cold spell and the air is dry, but will need to keep watching it. I didn't get this with other alcohol splashes like AV or Clubman.

I found I would sometimes get weird results with some aftershaves and aftershave balms if I used styptic on my face and didn't rinse it off. White chunky stuff would appear. Any chance you are using styptic or possibly alum, then applying aftershave?

Today was a Marlborough day for me - shaving cream, after shave, cologne... woodsy, maybe a little smokey - but not ashtray! (I've smelled a lot of ashtrays in my time: nickname was Butts for many years. Don't ask.)

I've had no experience with white stuff after after shave - I like Dave's explanation, though. (I don't use styptic or alum, so I guess you can include me in the control sample.)

I wanted to get this aftershave.

I'm intrigued by the smell.

Im used to using a soothing cream/lotion

Can anyone tell me about it. Does it soothe, moisturize, sting? Does it dry one's skin out?

Whelp, everyone's skin is different, but of the alcohol splashes I own DR Harris Marlborough isn't anywhere near the top of the list for skin friendly. The alcohol will sting (which is good or bad depending on your viewpoint) and alcohol will dry out the face (there are other alcohol splashes that have other face goodies in them to offset the alcohol, which Marlborough doesn't seem to have). Once my DR Harris Marlborough splash is gone it won't be replaced. I have the DR Harris Marlborough cologne for days I want to smell woody and manly. If I were you, I would spend the money on the cologne instead and stick with your current aftershave regime.

Now, the DR Harris Sandalwood stings like the dickens, but has tangy oils (seriously) which my skin quite likes. I typically put a dab of balm or moisturizer on after a non-skin friendly splash, but DR Harris Sandalwood is one a few splashes that don't require this extra moisturizing.

Smells like pencil shaving to my nose. Sniffed it in Pasteur the other day, and I'm glad I did. Almost bought it blind myself! You'll probably like the Arlington, though.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I will stay away from that. But I like your idea about the cologne. I may splurge on that.

Marlborough is at the top of my list, I love it I wish they made a lotion/balm for it but the splash is good, I offset the sting with a little bit of water on my face and you don't have to use as much of it.

Arlington on the other hand .... smells like my grandmother's old perfume.

I never quite got ashtray but I bet with the right body chemistry, it might come off that way. I get woodsy - like wood shavings woodsy.

My bottle is about half finished and I won't be replacing it. Arlington I have replaced and will continue doing so.
