Cuts along jawline

Ok, let me start by saying that I love shaving with a DE razor. I would never go back to the old Gillete Fusion and can of cream. Now my problem is, I've gone through a few different blades (Merkur, Derby, Feather, Astra) but I have the same problem with them all. I have a goatee and right under my jawline on either side of my goatee, no matter how careful I am, I always seem to come away with a few nicks on either side. Now haven't been doing this very long so I'm still figuring it out but I never had this problem before now. I'm just wondering what the possible problem is. Also, this is the only place where I seem to cut myself. Is it the angle I'm holding the razor? Could I possibly be pulling it across my face instead of pulling straight up? Any insight would help.

Sounds like it could be a pressure thing, unless your moving the razor sideways, which is unlikely. Try taking any and all pressure off when you shave that area. Try using just the pressure of the razor and see how that works.

Thanks for the response. I try and be a light with the pressure as possible but maybe I'm pressing harder in that area then I think I am. I'll give it a try next time I shave and see if it helps.

Could the angle at which you hold your razor be changed a bit?

I don't have any problems with nicks, but I do take care to get the angle just right on the sideburns and under the nose.

Try pulling the skin up such that it is on your face and not on you jaw line. That will give you more of a flat surface. Works for me at least. :001_smile

Think I've finally got it figured out. since posting this I've really worked on pressure but also really concentrating on getting the angle right. First one was a little better. Still a couple nicks but better. Second one, only a couple nicks on one side, feeling good. Today, no nicks or cuts plus one of the best shaves I've had since I dropped the cartridges and went DE. I was giddy afterwards. I love this!

I wonder to what extent the blade will make a difference.

I've found that I get a closer, more comfortable shave on the neck with the Red Personna.

I too have a goatee and had a similar problem when I started out. The two things that helped me were i) stretching my skin, and ii) applying no pressure whatsoever.

Best of luck!

I had this same problem. I actually get the best results by ignoring the North-South passes there and just cutting directly in toward the hair.
