Curiosity

I'd love giving a straight razor a try. Due to some fiscal deficiencies, I am unable to purchase a straight razor immediately. I'd still enjoy giving straight razor shaving a try. Anyone have any ideas?

You know, other than patience.

If you want a straight razor experience as cheap as possible go to a Sally's Beauty Supply store and buy a Fromm hair razor. They cost about 3 bucks and have a replaceable blade. They sell boxes of 5 blades for around 4 bucks. Is it nice? Not really, but it will give you an idea of whether or not you can shave with a straight without slicing your face off. I bought one and gave it a go for a few days when I decided that I would like to get into straight shaving. I ended up purchasing a Gold Dollar razor and a Filly strop from Ruprazor for 60 bucks and am very happy with it. I would have never made the plunge if I hadn't played around with that 3 dollar Fromm first. YMMV

you can get a filly strop for $20, and ugly, but very good straights pop up in our very own bst often for bargain basement prices.

straights are well worth looking into

The generosity and kindness that seems rampant on this forum is simply astounding.

My hat is off to you Leighton :thumbup1:

craziness. I actually found a straight on the BST that is shave-ready and shipped for a total of $20.

Just need to cash my check and I figure I cant get a better deal than that.

So who wants to explain how to strop with newspaper? x)

Seriously awesome how much generosity flows through this forum though. Absolutely insane.

I very much appreciate the offer Leighton!

It sounds like you found yourself a deal.

Newspaper will work but do not forget that newspaper won't replace leather... It won't be as good.

Good luck with the shave!

this is exactly what I did. I bought a straight the same week.

Glad to see I am not the only one. Sure, I could have saved $7 and just ordered the Gold Dollar combo right off, but I was at Sally's buying some other stuff anyway. I think it was worth the money to let me know whether or not I wanted to progress further down the rabbit hole. I am in the process of doing something similar with fountain pens. I grabbed a cheap one at Hobby Lobby to try out for a few weeks to determine whether or not I want to get a nice one. Eventually, it looks like I will be getting a better fountain pen. :001_smile
